Iām doing the Tullaroan 10k myself. The half marathon is probably a bit beyond me yet.
I ran a few miles with the FTD lads this morning. Theyāre doing a marathon in every county. 33 altogether in 33 days starting with London.
Inspiring lads. Huge crowd on the local park to see them off.
Tragic story. Because of a genetic mutation theyāre 99.9% certain to get a particularly bad form of Alzheimerās which has an early onset.
I headed over to Santry this morning but missed them by 5 minutes or so, & didnāt realise at the time. It was a bit of a pity as I would have liked to have been part of it. I was duped by a group of giddy school-kids who were on the corner of Shanowen Road & Swords Road holding their banners aloft. Ah lovely, I thought I was cutting it fine but Iāll jump in here when the boys & a few Raheny Shamrocks run past. And then 10 minutes passed & the school-kids were still there & a photographer was taking pictures of them with their posters etc. Still no sign, probably a late send off on the last day of the challenge. And then the kids walked pastā¦oh whatās happening here? I casually asked a woman giving off a teacher vibeā¦yeah they all ran past 15/20 minutes ago, it was brilliant. A photographer just held us back for some group photos, the kids were really excited. Oh well. I jogged back to Dublin 5 in the sunshine.
He ran 3.58 on Laois, 4.10 in Offaly and 3.50 in Kildare. Some going considering the heat and the fact he had ran marathons on the previous 29 days, the first with a fridge on his back.
I think they stop along the way for some PR stuff and photos I think. Some achievement from them and some amount of money generated. Their energy is amazing. Mrs Mac went to see them in Wicklow last weekend too. She had ran past the fridge in London and was chatting to him for a few mins without realizing what it was about there.
Jogged with them for a few km today. They had a great turnout. Must have been tough going last few days in the heat. They stopped for a good while today but think it was more down to the fact that DCC didnāt want them arriving at Merrion Sq until 2.15. Some achievement and amazing what theyāre doing.
Left it very late to sign up for the Kilkee half at the end of July. I must have been one of the last as itās gone up as sold out in the last day or two. Has anyone done it before? Seems to be relatively straight out and back, not a loop at all?
A tough enough course for both the experienced and a greenhorn like myself; all uphill from roughly 2km to 7.5km. I was talking to the winner and he said he was two minutes slower than his usual 10k time. I got around in just over 50 minutes which I was a bit disappointed with but lessons learnt etc. Signed up for one in Castleconnell in mid July which should be a bit less strenuous.
ā¬20 euro for the Tullaroan one was good value. The Castleconnell one is organised by JustRace is ā¬33 euro which is steep by comparison.
Any suggestions for a half marathon on the continent that could be incorporated in to a short family break? As in I do the run and the family are there to support.
What time of the year are you looking at?
The Barcelona half-marathon is always on around February mid-term break so perfect for what youāre looking for there. A nice course too and the weather is usually decent.
The continent is a pretty large area mate
I did Berlin last year. Highly recommended. books.l out early. Early April
Youāre a pretty large area, pal!
Spain, Portugal, Italy to start with I would say.
Iād be easy, but mid-term and in the Spring would be ideal.
Not on the continent but the Bath half takes place mid March every year and itās a great city to visit.
Bilbao in October? Iām looking at doing it this year. @Wexford1996 did it a few years back I think
Thatās the only half Iāve ran abroad and enjoyed it. Evening start but plenty to see and do in Bilbao.
