It’s a fraction of the demand to go to Europe and an easy funnel to set up geographically.

Big bucks being offered to house refugees.

Nope. But it doesn’t make sense to require people to stay in the first EU country of arrival, that system is quite unfair on southern European countries.

All of the EU. It would have been agreed years ago but Poland and Hungary will block any effort and migration reform or burden sharing. There’s nothing new in what I’m saying this has been Europe’s for years now. I don’t know what you mean about harmonisation the EU is already a single market.

So you can shop around when you are fleeing for your life?

This is quite a silly post. In tone and content.

No, you can’t. That why you generally end up in southern Europe. And it’s a stupid and unfair system within the EU that the southern European countries, who are generally the ones who can least afford to, have to host all the refugees.

Under a fair system all European countries would share the burden evenly, simple enough.

No it isn’t. It’s literally what’s happening and I see it every day at work. The vast majority of non-Ukrainian asylum seekers at Dublin airport already have claimed and have asylum somewhere else and decide to come here for a better deal. Whatever your thoughts on that, it’s not asylum, by any definition of the word.

Is that for 12 months? How many people are we talking about here

Big, big money to be made on refugees and asylum seekers. Solicitors, hotels, catering companies, even taxi drivers all coining it

NGOs too.

It pretty much is, it’s just asylum again. The current system in the EU is broken and has been for a long time. Until they fix it they’ll have stuff like this. Ireland got off lightly enough for long enough anyway.

@glasagusban taking on @Batigol in a debate on asylum is something i could watch. Policy v practice. Theory v real life.
I was surprised to see the airport police check the passports at the door of the plane as we got off from Turkey then i realised why.

No it’s not. It’s literal asylum shopping. Makes a complete mockery of genuine asylum seekers. People who have asylum in another country need to be sent back. Otherwise you create a thriving environment for people smugglers, false doc makers etc.

I agree that the system is broken. Our current system is farcical and literally rewards people for doing everything wrong

Id disagree. Surely if someone takes asylum somewhere then shops around for a better deal it’s effectively welfare tourism? It’d be like me moving to rosmuc to get my hands on some cash from ùdaràs na gaeltachta…

from looking at the photos of the march yesterday, it looks like one of the leaders of the far right mob is an old team mate of @Juhniallio

It is asylum shopping. But its a result of the broken EU system. If you have English or French or German and want to work why would you stay in Greece or Italy or Malta?

Wtf? Send it on please!
I’ve been offline today attending a pro choice *funding march on our nations main st.

*think thats what it was for. The posters were unclear.
