The Anti-Rugby Football Thread

He was giving it the big 'un at Windsor Park last week too when they qualified.

They are eligible for the 26 county team.

If anyone who is born in the 32 counties is eligible how is it a 26 county team to begin with?

Because the Football Association of Ireland is the football member association for the 26 counties. Being eligible for that Association is irrelevant. In fact the fact that you have to get a passport to the 26 County Republic of Ireland only weakens your argument, as the 6 counties in the North are not a part of this state.

No mate, they are eligible for the team that FIFA calls ā€œRoIā€, which is a 32 county team.

I thought it was citizens who played the game - not administrators.

There is only one governing body for rugby football in this country, that is the Irish Rugby Football Union. The splitter sport did so in Australia and England.

Citizens of a 26 county Republic which has no territorial claim to any other territory in its Constitution?

So whatā€™s different to the rugby team?

You do not need a passport of the 26 County Irish State to play for the Irish Rugby Football Union side. It represents the island of Ireland, not any small part of that territory.

What difference do passports make? If you are born in the 32 you are entitled to play for Ireland. Why do you continue to ignore that matter. Anyone born in the 32 can play for Ireland.

Lets just get back on topic here.

That a united, inclusive all-island Ireland association football team has never featured at a major championship is squarely down to the founders of the FAI, a partitionist, mono-ethnic, mono-cultural organisation.

Partitionist, splitting cunts.

Heā€™s completely managed to shift the focus here from the miserable defeat of his beloved rugby footballers to another tired old rehash of the two soccer teams question. Heā€™s got a whole host of posters dancing to his tune.

It makes a difference because you are eligible to get a passport to the 26 County state to be eligible to play for the FAI Association team. It is the 26 county team.

Letā€™s not get carried away mate.
In Argentina, Rugbee occupies a similar position in the social/cultural heirarchy to what it does in Oireland, a game played by the upper middle class private school attending sons of doctors and lawyers, many of whom would be from families with some English. Irish (like Che Lynch), Welsh and Scottish roots.

Soccer is the sport of the working classes, esp those of Italian descent, and far more popular in generalā€¦

Indeed

The clubs and associations who attended the meeting voted to establish the Football Association of Ireland to develop and administer the game throughout the 32 Counties of Ireland.

The decision was seen by many as an expression of the spirit of Nationalism that was intensifying at the time. And the determination to follow a separate path was final despite repeated efforts by the IFA to restore the old order.

The decision was not popular, however, with the FAIā€™s sister associations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and a special conference was called for Liverpool in 1923 when the FAI sought to re-build bridges and establish good relations.

They voted to re-name the Football Association of Ireland and to confine their jurisdiction to the 26 Counties. Thus was born the Football Association of the Irish Free State.

The irony being that apparently the Ireland rugby team and Northern Ireland soccer team are ā€œWest Britsā€ when only one association agreed that they would represent the 26 County Irish Free State.

Hes taken on all comers, you have to give him that.

Iā€™d recommend someone to find the bit from yesterdays Off the Ball where big Trev Hogan spoke lyrically about how Donncha Ryan showed his athletic prowess as a chap by chasing after the Hogans sheep. It obviously didnt get the reception he wanted first time out, so said it again about 5 minutes later.

At least heā€™s gone down fighting and not rolled over and had his belly tickled like his heroes.
