The Anti-Rugby Football Thread

Because it’s the social media generation and they’re cunts is my guess.

A right cunt of a cunt? Seriously, is the world fucked?! This sort of shit would suggest so.

You could have picked a better example on the GAA front Sid. He was playing with Liberties (Limerick club) for a few years before he transferred down and still lives in Limerick. Hardly A grade mercenary stuff.

I don’t agree with Costa - but I don’t think that’s a large scale phenom in soccer tho you will always get cases of it but in proportion to numbers playing in both sports rugby is a farce.

I’ve answered the 1990-94 and Irish soccer thing in general.

Joe McKenna hurled with South Liberties I think.

My defection seems from the anti-rugby set seems to have rattled you lot tremendously, doesn’t it?

It’s like everything you believe has been brought crashing down around around you.

Now it’s merely a matter of damage limitation for you.

A few years is three. This was the example given to criticise the rugby eligibility rules.

It seems it’s OK for Limerick hurlers, but not for rugby.

Again - proportion, pal. A shocking amount of international rugby players have zero links to the country they represent.

I’m just saying there are better examples.
How much was McKenna paid to come to South Liberties?
Will Strauss setup a hardware store in Dublin?

Lot of GAA players have no links to the county they represent. There’s a long history of outsiders winning All-Ireland medals. Right back to the beginning of the GAA.

The GAA is hardly a good example anyway, pal… we are on about representing your country here, the highest ambition in sport. What is a country without a flag? without an anthem and with mercanaries playing for them?

There may be better examples. It’s a relevant example.

Ray Houghton and Jason McAteer scored the three most famous goals in Eire soccer history.

Neither, as far as I’m aware, have ever lived in Ireland.

From what I remember McAteer wasn’t even aware that he was qualified to play for Eire until he was tapped up, and it was a similar story with Townsend, Cascarino and Aldridge.

That doesn’t sound like these players had any special, or indeed any sort of connection or affinity with Ireland.

It was a merely a declaration of convenience in order to play international soccer for them.

How many?

Conveniently omitting Ibaraki and Genoa*

  • cue Sidney claiming goals scored from penalties aren’t “real” goals

I imagine the responses will include Iain Henderson, Chris Henry, Paddy Jackson etc.

That’s the kind of partitionist mentality you’re dealing with here from the anti-rugby set.

FIFA would agree with me that penalties scored in penalty competitions aren’t real goals, pal.

Hence Eire scoring two goals in five matches in 1990, not seven goals.

Irish people would agree with me that David O’Leary scored the biggest goal in this country’s history.

The nation held its breath ffs sake

From my figures it looks like that almost 25% of original squads were born over seas with almost 140 players at this tournament alone not born in the country they play for.

39 New Zealanders played in this WC for other countries.
