So they missed about 5 weeks of their summer holidays to get about the equivalent pay? Hardly that enticing now, is it?
The same players who decided to pay themselves for their partners to travel to the competition so the money could be reinvested in grassroots Irish football.
You donât think his involvement in the 1994 World Cup would have played a part in his contract negotiation with Liverpool in 1995?
Didnât he write a book on his career which probably wouldnât have sold a copy had he not played for Ireland? Even before that goal in 2002 he would have been able to pull a few quid from Irish media outlets in his retirement that he would never have been able to do had he never played internationally.
It would probably have a detrimental effect alright.
A certain Tony Cascarino is a poster boy I would of thought.
Itâs not the same at all.
Tony is a bit of a gobshite and his story was used to sell books. He was perfectly qualified to play for Ireland at the time.
So they paid for their wives & girlfriends to go on their work trip? Well done to them, what benevolent souls
Not really, it would had if they had signed him straight off the back of the World Cup, but it was probably his role in getting Bolton to the Premiership and impressing against Liverpool in the League Cup Final that had a the impact.
How much did he make off his book?
Incorrect, Cascarino was playing for Ireland under the understanding that he had Irish heritage which was proven to be false.
Butler played for Ireland because he married an Irish woman.
He knew the truth after 3 caps.
You didnât need a passport to play for Ireland back when Tony was playing. Natural bloodlines versus adopted parenthood doesnât make a difference to claims on nationality anyway. It was a nice piece of drama for publicity though. Disappointing that PK wanted to be a part of it.
They doubled their wages. They also enjoyed commercial and sponsorship deals.
Why did he feel the need to apply for the passport in the first place then?
Some players would rather their 5 weeks off. I would take 5 weeks more holidays in a heartbeat rather than 5 weeks extra wages on top of what I already earn.
The money is not a big deal for them and Iâd say what they may (or may not have made) in sponsorship is small change to them.
Footballers are paid handsomely, they donât need to lower themselves for a few extra quid.
How long does your career last? The money is increasingly not as big a deal as the Premier League wages have exploded (not that the ROI have as many of those these days with fewer Brits playing Englsh football). But it was a pretty big deal for them back in the day. Footballers wages have gone from being twice the average rate from back when Big Jack was picking up players to something bonkers these days.
He had a right to one. That was his choice. Some players got them, others didnât. It wasnât a requirement for FIFA at the time.
He was obviously turned down because there was a difference between what he submitted and the reality. But it wouldnât have taken anything to resubmit with the correction and heâd have been fine. I guess he wasnât bothered as it wasnât required. That wouldnât make for a very interesting newspaper serialisation though.
The one thing I would say is that itâs hard to believe much of what comes out of his mouth so weâre relying on interpreting what he said, which didnât really amount to much.
Informative.
When did the said rule change regarding needing a passport?
An extra 70k a year to them is pocket change, if you earned 5% bonus on your salary do you think you would actually save it or put it to use?
Footballers earn big money and for some it doesnât matter how much they earn, theyâll find a way to blow it. For others theyâd probably much rather relax at home or in the company of their friends having to do something they donât enjoy and consumes their free time for a relatively paltry sum.
1996 I believe.
