Kilkenny v Galway 2006 All-Ireland hurling quarter-final

This was a far closer game than you remember

  • Edit, I’m mixing it up with 2007

Cork have won the All-Ireland hurling championship 30 times. In 12 of those years Kerry won the football.

Tipp have won the All-Ireland hurling championship 28 times but in only 3 of those years did Kerry win it, and not since 1962.

Tipp have won a two in a row more recently than they won an All-Ireland in the same year as Kerry.

Two in a row defeats in All-Ireland finals since 1950

Hurling:
Tipperary 1967 and 1968 - won 1971
Wexford 1976 and 1977 - the end
Cork 1982 and 1983 - won 1984
Galway 1985 and 1986 - won 1987 and 1988
Kilkenny 1998 and 1999 - won the next 15
Kilkenny 2022 and 2023 - have not got back so far

Football:
Meath 1951 and 1952 - won 1954
Cork 1956 and 1957 - the end
Kerry 1964 and 1965 - lost 1968, won 1969
Galway 1973 and 1974 - did not get back
Dublin 1978 and 1979 - team had to be gutted and rebuilt before getting back to win 1983
Dublin 1984 and 1985 - did not get back
Cork 1987 and 1988 - won 1989 and 1990
Mayo 1996 and 1997 - did not get back
Mayo 2012 and 2013 - got back again after a three year interval
Mayo 2016 and 2017 - got back again after another three year interval
Mayo 2020 and 2021 - the end

An incomplete list of utterly pointless corporate name changes in Ireland:

Dublin Corporation became Dublin City Council
Bord Fáilte became Fáilte Ireland
Posts and Telegraphs became Telecom Eireann
Telecom Eireann became Eircom
Eircom became Eir
An Bord Pleanála became An Comisiún Pleanála
The Irish Amateur Boxing Association became the Irish Athletic Boxing Association
Ernst & Young became EY
Aer Rianta became ARI
Irish Water became Uisce Éireann

An incomplete list of failed Mayo omens:

1989: The previous time Mayo won the All-Ireland in 1951, Tipp won the hurling. This was Mayo’s first All-Ireland final for 38 years and Tipp won the hurling for the first time in 18 years.
1996: Mayo’s last All-Ireland was won against Meath in the final. But the Oasis derby final predictably descended into fighting and predictably the Meath fellas won that.
2012: The All-Ireland final was on September 23rd, and it was on September 23rd in 1951.
2013: Kilkenny did not play a senior hurling championship match in Croke Park. The previous time this happened was 1951.
2014: The World Cup was in Brazil, the previous time it was in Brazil was 1950 when Mayo won the All-Ireland
2015: 15 is an anagram of 51.
2016: Mayo had never lost an All-Ireland in October. The WESTERN Bulldogs won the AFL Premiership for the first time since the 1950s the morning of the All-Ireland replay. Tipp won the All-Ireland hurling championship as they did in 1951.
2017: 'Twas all set up for the Great Western Double.
2018: Mayo had a 100% record in senior football championship matches against Dublin played on September 2nd, the date of that year’s All-Ireland final.
2019: The British Open was played at Royal Portrush for the first time since 1951.
2020?
2021?
2022: The curse had been lifted due to them all being dead.
2023: Joe Biden says Mayo For Sam. The previous championship Queen Elizabeth II was not the reigning United Kingdomish monarch was 1951.
2025: The British Open returns to the 1951 venue Royal Portrush and Mayo’s finest Oasis return, to Croke Park no less.

That was a Munster Semi Final; Cork and Clare contested the Munster Final that year.

Second one should be 1993 but I got trapped in a Milpool train of thought.

Declan hannon

No, I’m a Hannon truther. He is and was too slow without a huge amount of help all around him.

Each to their own I guess.

He was the right man in the right place and has the medals to prove it, just not a difference maker.

If Limerick left Hayes at 7 and played O’Donoghue at 6 they would have won the all Ireland this year.

Jesus I dunno about that. They were hammered by Dublin.

It’s now four years and three days, or 1,464 days since I saw Andrew Omobamidele play football.

This is the exact same gap as that between the day Jason McAteer scored against Holland at Lansdowne Road and the epic Tyrone v Armagh All-Ireland football semi-final of 2005 when the greatest Gaelic football player ever scored the winner with the second last kick of the game.

Darren Gibson was another based off a handful of appearances for Man U.

I thought of including him and Terry Dixon.

Perhaps Jayson Molumby too.

I don’t remember a huge clamouring for Momumby.

Keith Fahey had a decent cameo off the bench at home v Montenegro or Georgia in Trap’s first campaign and there was a big clamour for him to come into the team until his next appearance where he played to form

Stephen Reid is another example of this too

They could have done with him in Armenia the other night.

He was a starter in Trap’s early stages but as usual got fucked with injuries.
