He was on the footpath, on the phone, waiting for a lift it seemed.
A scruffy looking beggar, he wasnât as fat as I thought heâd be.

Could you add a little more colour on his attendance at this event? What capacity did he attend in? A parent or relation of a graduand, did he just happen to wander in or was he a guest of honour?
I presume he was there because his daughter was graduating?
