The 10th place finish in 2015/16 was to use a favourite word of a former poster @Nembo_Kid an anomaly. Chelsea won the league in 2014/15 finishing 8 points ahead of 2nd placed Man City and 12 points ahead of 3rd place Woolwich. Players downed tools following season to get Mourinho fired. Mourinho was fired after Chelsea lost at Leicester, their 9th defeat in first 16 games. Chelsea appointed Hiddink as caretaker and immediately embarked on a 15 game unbeaten league run in games 17-31.
Conte brought in a few players but he largely inherited Mourinhoās team that coasted to the title in 2014/15. Conte has spent most of this season moaning about congested fixture schedules and injuries. Those were two huge benefits for Chelsea last season. Players taking a season off in 2015/16 meant there was no European football in 2016/17, mostly just one game a week and Chelsea remained almost completely injury free all season.
