A glimpse of simpler times and tells its own little story. A good night had by all hopefully.
We have a receipt like this from a grocery/public house in the nearby village dated 1955. On it are items like a crate of minerals, a crate of stout, x amount of candles, sugar, tea. Big quantities and not your usual weekly shop. When we found it, we wondered at the list and its makeup. A party?
Sadly no, on checking the date it was the shopping list for my grandfatherās wake. My Dad was only 5 at the time and had never seen it before.
Bullshit about the barracks apparently
The 5p coin replaced the shilling and continued to be known as a Bob (in Cork anyway)
If somebody asked you for 2 Bob they wanted 10p
That was a florin I think
I remember the 7p bag of taytos aswell
Do you remember the 1/2p sweetsā¦ they were round toffee covered in chocolateā¦ if you were flush youād buy chocolate mice for 2p each
So it was you used go into Ivanās asking how much were the penny sweets?
Pub near me used to do Kitkats for 30p. Dairy milk was 33. Taytos were 20. Can of Coke 50p.
Youād do wreck with a fiver
Why Ireland has Scandinavian prices but without the salaries to justify them
Could anyone do the needful?
I remember cans for 35p in Ivanās but they quickly went up to 50.
Whatever happened to the Supercan, Jesus that was some job.
Now then.
Some averages are more averagey than others, eg clothing.
Accommodation cost is a much wider range from my experience of recent years.
