The Golden cage. People build it themselves as their income increases slowly over years.

Peoples lifestyles expand as they make more money. Nicer car, bigger TV, nicer holiday, more money on home improvements, kid activities etc

Disposable income at end of month is not much different

Money is a liquid, when the amount of money you get rises, it just flows into new gaps. Gaps you hadn’t even known existed before

I was told most people operate to 110% of their income, regardless or what it increases or decreases to.

I presume he meant before tax, so you’d be looking at closer to 3k a month spending.
By the time you’ve the mortgage paid, childcare, car loan etc there wouldn’t be a lot left in a lot of households

Thinking further about that - the amount I currently spend in a year on childcare would

• Let me buy a new car yearly in cash
• Let me have weekly nights out in Chapter One
• Let me have a foreign holiday every two months
• Let me raise the deposit for a South Dublin house in a couple of years and then would cover the mortgage
