Where were they playing?
Iâve decided to listen to five songs by The Verve on the YouTubes after seeing this post.
Oasis are not playing Columbia in their setlist which is a major disappointment.
It was recently revealed on this forum that Columbia was a complete rip off of this and maybe thatâs why theyâre not playing it. Or perhaps they couldnât remember the chord changes.
The Verve would never rip off another song though.
Cardiff
Never heard that before. Columbia is one of Oasisâ better songs.
Mention of The Verve (originally âVerveâ) brings me right back.
In sixth year in school I had become rather pigeonholed by some people as a stereotypical Oasis fan dullard because I was perceived by some people, ie. the schoolâs equivalents of @farmerinthecity who prided themselves on being serious music nerds (they listened to bands like Pavement and Sonic Youth), as being loud, yobbish and having modelled my personality and hair on the Gallaghers. They perceived me as being a bit of an unthinking, anti-intellectual buffoon basically and they were somewhat on the mark in this assessment of my then personality and character.
I sat down one day for Irish class and before the class had started I was talking to the lad in the desk about two feet away from me and the short discussion revolved around music. This fella was a genuine music nerd and looked, sounded and behaved pretty much exactly like Toby Amies, then MTVâs âseriousâ music presenter. I both liked him and hated him.
In this short discussion he decided to wind me up by portraying me as a dullard who only listened to Oasis. I defensively said to him âeh, no youâre wrong actually, I donât just listen to Oasis, Iâve been expanding my record collection latelyâ.
Smarmily but devastatingly, he replied to me âYes, youâve expanded it to include⌠The Verve.â
With that comment, he totally destroyed me.
This comment pretty much shamed me into becoming an avid weekly viewer of No Disco with Uaneen Fitzsimons very shortly afterwards.
Think thatâs Richard Ashcroft
The lack of a 2020s equivalent of a song like Columbia and an album like Definitely Maybe is partly to blame for large sections of young British and Irish manhood falling into the rabbit hole of the likes of Andrew Tate and Conor McGregor.
You simply donât have loud guitar music today that makes 16 to 20 year olds want to thump their fists off their chests like a gorilla and turn up the volume of the stereo to waking up the house five doors down at 4am level.
In the beginning, there was Columbia. Columbia more than any other song was what hooked 14-20 year old males (and females) on Oasis.
That deserves a nice post at the very minimum.
Sure they put lady Di up there back in the day too.A nice touch though to be fair.Great to see them back all the same. Not a patch on the Earls Court gig i seen them in back in 97.
Hope Columbia appears before croker
Devastating put down in fairness. Good story
Iâd imagine these fellas have one set worked out and itâll be that set every night for the entirety of it.
And they wonât give a solid fuck either
Itâs almost like they are absolutely shite to watch live in concert .
They do absolutely nothing on stage no bells and whistles but absolutely everyone at it is fully engaged in the show, singing every word and having the absolute time of their life for the whole two hours plus.
Lots of deleted drafts all over social media Iâd say on how Liamâs voice would sound.
They sounded absolutely incredible.
Oasis Doc on Channel 4
Liamâs singing is the best thing about the band
