My favourite Neil Diamond moment came many years ago on the radio.
That spoofer Gerry Ryan was running a quick competition on his radio show for the best impersonation to the tune of Sweet Caroline with 2 tickets to see Neil in Lansdowne Road so off we go:
A couple of bluffers make a balls of it and on comes Anto from
Artane who isn’t a whole lot better - Gerry guffaws and says thanks Anto.
Another few have a go when the auditions are cancelled to take a call from NEIL….
Gerry suspects a bluffer but the guy is authentic, recounts meeting Gerry “you the dude with the ponytail” after a previous gig and his leather coat etc and Ryan is hooked. They whizz the records back and forth before “Neil” says he thought Anto had done a great version of the song to which Ryan fawningly concurred……
