The New FAI Premier League

His quotes make for good reading alright.

Re European results; that may just be because of the move to summer football. With all the Eastern European and Scandinavian leagues going from April to November they always had a march on us. We have now matched up with them time-wise so it might be more of a general fitness thing as opposed to any large increase in quality.

Wexford Youths FC (shit name for a team) have been granted their licence. Former Wexford football captain John Hudson made himself unavailable for Paul Bealin’s squad this season citing work commitments as he’s based in Drogheda and now I gather he’s training with the soccer squad. I’m going to take a spin out to Newcastle tomorrow to see what the facilities are like. From the Indo website:

Wexford Youths FC set to join new Eircom League

Wexford Youths FC have been awarded a licence to join the new Eircom League.
The outfit will play in the First Division and will be based in Newcastle, just north of Wexford town.

The manager will be well-known property developer Mick Wallace, while former St Pat’s and Cork City boss Pat Dolan is expected to be his assistant.

Drove out to have a gander at Newcastle, home of Wexford Youths FC, there.

Had a quick look around before being kindly asked to leave!

There’s 2 all weather pitches and the surfaces look spot on to me. In between the 2 pitches there’s a large clubhouse that’s still being constructed. You can see he’s installing lifts and stuff in it and it’s 2-storey and fairly large so I guess there’ll be a gym, bar, dressing rooms etc in there.

Then at the far end beside the main road there’s an enclosed (with netting) and floodlit training/5-a-side area of 5 or 6 pitches.

The next stage of the development is to install a stand on one side of the main pitch along with floodlights. Apparently, the ultimate aim is to play the home games under lights on a Friday night. Up until they’re installed games will be played on Sunday afternoons which might impact on attendances with Wexford NFL and NHL GAA games generally taking place on a Sunday.

But it’s a pretty slick set-up all in all as you’d expect with Wallace.
