This is also very true.
We also have people regularly dying in the stands of sporting fixtures and theyâre not stopped either.

This is very true. Iâd say the swim is the weakest leg for a large proportion of triathlon people. And sea training is difficult timewise for many people. Many are just not experienced enough in the sea. It may come as a surprise to many but i enjoy a bit of sea swimming and even enjoy swimming in rough water but the kicking and the elbows are really really annoying and can completely throw people off their stroke and breathing.
Itâs like D Day in reverse.
Did the two poor lads drown in the water or have heart attacks or what?
Initially reports seemed to suggest one had a heart attack either before or at the start and it sounded like he never actually entered the water proper.
The other one was found floating unresponsive âafter a medical emergencyâ but again that seems a fairly broad term.
Sounds like two heart attacks, one in the water and one beforehand.
Initially I thought to myself âyes, thatâs a no brainerâ, but youâd often hear about people dying during the London Marathon or whatever and it would seem ridiculous to abandon the London Marathon, or the Dublin marathon for that matter, over one person dying.
But youâd definitely abandon a junior football match if a player collapsed.
Stating the obvious here, but context is everything. If swimmers are being drowned because of dangerous conditions, I think you abandon. If somebody dies of a heart attack at the start line or in the water, Iâm not sure.
Those conditions looked a wee bit dangerous and I think the swimming leg shouldnât have gone ahead either way.
Yes, it definitely looks that way. We had a chap from our club that only took up swimming properly 10 weeks ago and he got through it. Hr finished in the top 50 overall though.
Iâve seen a good few saying these should be on lakes. When the wind is up lakes can be as bad, Ive definitely seen that in the last two years and thereâs the added challenge of potentially 0% visibility with that as well.
Should be a back up plan for west coast Atlantic.
An inland lake is unlikely to be as rough. The sea didnât look too rough to me, just the entry breakers. Iâd have swum.in that happily.
For the record, almost none of the competitors would have had any idea what was going on regarding the deaths.
Yeah weâve never had to call off the swim at Sheephaven for the half Ironman. The lake has been much rougher for the sprint the last two years.
Interesting that a lot of the quotes from politicians in relation to this seem very restrained and measured. Would keeping Ironman inc onside be important? Are these events big tourism drivers?
They donât know the full facts, wait until the post mortemâŚ
Adverse?
So if it wasnât sanctioned by the governing body, why did it go ahead? Will they be banned from holding future events in Ireland?
No, private event not on the TI calendar as I understand it.
Similar to many of the marathons in the country, cant speak for other cityâs but the Limerick one is a private company and the entery fee goes to them. âRaises money for local causesâ really means people getting sponsership themselves to donate due to participation. The cunting organisers ask local volunteering groups to help out for a measly donation.
A complete cod considerating they close half the city for it
Cycling club and triathlon club have organised a memorial cycle for her today with all funds going to Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust. Iâm off now for a day of marshalling with approximately 350 cyclists registered
