It would be absolutely tremendous for Glasgow and for Scotch/Irish football on the whole if the Bears could progress. I didnāt see the second sending off but I agreed with McCoist that the first one was very harsh. He made an attempt to play the ball with his foot but was done by Roofe getting there first and the ref just took the bundling over into account rather than the attempt that preceded it.
Seville, absolutely lovely city. The good people of the city thinking about the last time a team from Glasgow was there for a European final, no major hassle, how bad could this crew be they are probably thinkingā¦Come on Leipzig
They went to 5 at the back with Lundstram flanked by Goodson and Bassey. A midfield trio of Jack, Aribo and Kamara and then Wright and Kent upfront. They played with a low block (cc @Bisto) and looked to contain rather than progress upfield or retain the ball. Neither Wright nor Kent excel at hold up play so they kinda resorted to kicking it over the top and letting them run after it. But they werenāt committing men forward to support them either. So Leipzig had the ball and were probing but didnāt create too much in the first half.
Rangers tweaked things at half time by moving to 5-4-1. Wright and Kent moved to their preferred positions on the right and left side respectively and Aribo played as the centre forward, even though heās a midfield player. He does possess more size and strength than the other two and was able to link the play up better. They had a decent spell early in the second half when Kent flashed a shot across goal and wide and they had more play generally and a couple of corners. I donāt know if Roofe was injured or suspended but he didnāt feature. I take it Ramsey is done for the season now too.
But Leipzig gradually re-established dominance and pressed for the goal for the last quarter. It was a very good strike by Angelino in the end to win it on the night. As Rangers sat in for the most part, they probably didnāt expend as much energy as in other games. But it definitely would have taken a lot of concentration to keep plugging gaps, staying compact and defending in unison. Bassey was very good for them again. Heās quite raw but has excellent physical attributes and a good attitude. Heās also versatile and it was embarrassing how he powered forward in extra time in the cup semi having moved from centre to left back and left Forrest in his wake to set up the winner. Forrest was barely on the field at the time.
But thatās an aside. Itās all to play for in the second leg. Rangers turned around a 1-goal deficit against Braga in the last round but Leipzig have apparently been very strong away from home in the competition.
I think itās a totally different proposition against these than Bragaā¦ Braga only know to play one way from what Iāve seen of them ā¦I think the goal last night is absolutely huge as it forces Rangers to come out and do something against very dangerous opposition . I could see these picking off Rangers at home ā¦ well hopefully !! The huns have definitely got more resilient on last few weeks since Gio started involving more players ā¦
