Hjk the tough one
Great to see the working man’s club on the up …the co-op model is to be admired …
eh, akinade?
eh the lockout?
eh,the WOI?
Eh, Mandrous partner?
eh selling their ground twice?
Surely Linfield collegiality should be in there somewhere ?
Point stands … they are run like a gaa club with fans from the one area … rovers have drifted around too much and have now attracted a sugar daddy
eh, the RAF?
we have had a sugardaddy for years mate
A 50% stake of Rovers’ ownership will be retained by the members with Ray Wilson, the club’s other major investor, taking a 25% stake
Co op model is great
worked so well for us we have attracted a loose affiliations of millionaires & billionaires to the club
cheers
Either way it’s great to see three Irish teams still in europa league and Sligo going to the wire with Rosenberg
Georgie Kelly was muck when with St Pats
This is frustrating
You’d give Rovers a good shout of getting through 2 more rounds
informative piece from Dan here
The results were badly needed for the league’s ranking which was set for a massive drop with 2016 (and Dundalk’s incredible run) dropping out of the five year timeframe for calculation.
At the start of the campaign, a drop from 37th to 48th was on the cards. Right now, the fall will only be to 42nd but the three remaining teams (Shamrock Rovers got a bye through the second round) have a viable chance to improve on that and set up the next five years from a decent marker.
As mentioned previously, it’s a club’s individual results rather than the league rating that determines match seeding.
That is why Dundalk are actually the seeded team when they meet Eredivisie side Vitesse Arnhem next week.
But the coefficient does tell a tale in terms of how teams are performing and the upturn is encouraging although there’s a natural reluctance to get too carried away.
The popular theory is that the new Conference League has allowed Irish clubs to score wins, gain cash and build confidence and that’s technically true.
It might be underselling results a bit, though. Dundalk’s seeding would have put them on the right side of the draw in the first two rounds of the old format where our (non-champion) qualifiers kicked off in the Europa League qualifiers.
Similarly, going off the 2020 rankings, Dudelange’s rating would have comfortably allowed them to be seeded in the second round of the Europa League too.
It is true, though, that the chances of a kinder draw are more favourable.
Nevertheless, the list of teams eliminated last night includes Steaua Bucharest, AEK Athens, Hajduk Split, BATE Borisov and Austria Vienna so there are good sides in there.
That’s evidenced by the opposition for Dundalk and Bohs next week.
While Dundalk prepare for their Dutch jaunt, the Gypsies welcome Greek powerhouses PAOK to the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday.
These are the type of ties that LOI players strive to play in Europe for.
Meanwhile, Rovers will be favourites to advance against Albania’s Teuta Dorres because they are in the section of the draw reserved for champions knocked out of the other competitions and Stephen Bradley’s side will be happy to avoid glamour at this stage of the game. They are by far the most realistic Irish contenders for advancement to the group phase.
Still, don’t be surprised if Dundalk and Bohs give a decent account of themselves in their stiff tests. The most striking aspect of their fixtures was the passages where the Irish sides comfortably kept hold of the ball because of the technical players at their disposal.
It’s a talking point that is relevant when the quality of the LOI is discussed. The levels of intensity have dropped from the mid to late 2000s when the ceiling was high and seasoned observers feel the current standard is below that peak. Yet the style of play favoured by teams now is arguably better suited to the rhythm of European fare.
Strong battle hardened LOI sides used to either convert to an ultra defensive shape and let opponents have the ball or struggle to adjust to a possession based demand. Bohs and Dundalk may spend time with their backs to the wall next week, but the prevailing philosophy now is that allowing their creative players to flourish is the only way to make things happen on the European field. Their next hurdles may be too big to overcome, yet they will approach it in a way that gives them the best opportunity to do so.
sorry lads - we had a football tournament today, us, Kells and St. Francis out from Dublin

if the BSC/FC RAF/Bohs beat PAOK they the play the winners of Hibernian and NK Rijeka… the wont fear either of those but PAOK is the problem- i think PAOK put Benfica out of the European cup last year
