Why didn’t he get RTÉ SPOTY in 2015? He was arguably the most buzzy sports star in the world and yet we have the prize to a boxer winning some dodgy tournament or another somewhere.
McGregor won it the next year after an outcry from his minions. I’d argue he’d have got a world SPOTY in 2015 after that Aldo fight and yet in little old Ireland (who love any wins) he was always a bit meh.
He is the oddest sports star in my lifetime from Ireland. We have jockeys that people revered more than McGregor in his pomp ffs.

McGregor was well liked after his first fight in 2013 and there was plenty of good will towards him rolling up to 2015. I was always meh about him but but as someone that watched ufc from the mid 00s i always had respect for any lad who could make a go of fighting in MMA… but he had outed himself as a scumbag by the time the aldo fight came around and nose dived after winning.
None of that detracts from what appeared to be a loveable rogue in 2013.
Lads should stop trying to rewrite history.
