Reading through the names and identities and avatars of the Twitter accounts that reply to McGregor’s tweets, and the tweets thwey themselves out, is grimly fascinating.

It’s a bit like when the headbangers sound the klaxons on here and all reply to each other for moral support.

People shouldn’t dismiss all these trollbot accounts as pathetic. They’re a large and very under rated part of the reason America is the way it is and they’re a very major part of the reason we have the far right problem we do in this country.

The President in Ireland has immense ceremonial and symbolic power and immense power to influence public opinion should they decide to use their office in that way. McGregor as President would be an immensely powerful figure and the “normal” politicians of Fianna Fail and Fine Gael would bend to him because that’s what the empty liberal class do, they bend and they break. The spine-free media would also bend and break. You’d have the Sindo and other papers frequently writing editorials like “McGregor’s modus operandi may be uncouth, but on many things he has a point.” His cheerleaders would take over Irish social media. He would unleash horrific forces that would profoundly change the country for the worse.

What was once unthinakable and grotesque becomes utterly normal. Grotesqueness and shamelessness is now utterly normal across the western world, most obviously in the US.
