New show tonight starting on RTE1 at 8pm with that absolute fooking idiot Des Cahill.
I thought Parklive was getting decent last year after a shaky start and they haven’t brought it back (maybe because of Ger Gilroy’s Newstalk commitments?) but to replace it with yet anoter Des Cahill fronted show is surely a disaster.
The lad is a clown and has had more shots at doing sport shows than I care to remember. All of them have been scheidt due to his appalling lack of knowledge, poor interviewing style and just downright amatuerism and shoddiness.
They should bring back Breaking Ball instead.
That said I’ll watch this later to laugh at Des.
rocko, what thread was your post with the exchange between Des and a caller to his radio show in?
Saw five minutes of it and I couldn’t watch anymore. He did his phone-in show on RT then handed over to the equally washed up Dave Fanning before heading off to do his Road to Croker. Have they nobody else they could have asked?
I remember when I was younger and Des Cahill came on the radio and Rock Senior started shouting at him to get off the f’n stage. I was naive at the time and I defended Cahill - saying I thought he was quite good on 2fm in the mornings. What a fool I am but it says everything about the guy that he’s loved by housewives and 12 year-olds and 74 year-old Everton fans from Carlow. Gobshite.
I’m guessing that Newstalk going national with Gilroy’s permanent move to news from sport didn’t help his chances of getting another gig with RT but it didn’t exactly harm Hook did it?
Here’s the thread you were after Bandage:

And I think this is the post:
Agreed with most of that Ball Ox other than Des Cahill. I can’t believe I didn’t mention him before now - has there ever been a less competent sports presenter on radio? His phone in show is laughable:
“Tell me Joe you were at the Chelsea game were you?”
“I was Des.”
“And how was it Joe?”
“Well Des there was bad language from the United fans?”
“Ah no.”
“Yeah.”
“Go on Joe.”
“Sorry Des?”
“Go on… Is there more to it Joe?”
“No, that’s it Des.”
“Ah I see. Terrible these days isn’t it though. What do you think they can do about it Joe?”
“I don’t know Des.”
“No, I suppose not. Do you support Chelsea Joe?”
“No.”
“I don’t either. I hate Man United though ha ha ha.”
“Ah yeah.”
“Hmmm yeah…Ok Joe well listen best of luck and we’ll talk to you aga…”
“Sorry Des…”
“Yeah Joe.”
“Sorry Des I was just going to say I love the show.”
“Thanks Joe.”
“No bother.”
“Ok sure we’ll talk to you again and enjoy the rest of the show.”
There was a few Up For The Match type moments alright, especially with Alan Brogan’s mother being interviewed but overall I was pleasantly surprised. The camera following the Sligo kit man for the day of the game was genuinely moving - I had a little lump in my throat and in my trousers too - and made for good TV. Martin McHugh was forthright and analytical which is what you want in a pundit and I like Damien Lawlor (despite his defection to the Sindo) after the smashing job he did on Liam Dunne’s book. A decent debut imo.
