That’s exactly it, a far different game back then and the better for it. Incredible dynamism and a good man to spot a gap. Brave as fuck, too much for his own good really. Suffered from being one of the few game breakers most sides he played with had.
Shur look it, you loved Limerick hurling but went to an auld wedding instead of an All Ireland semi final. Lads make decisions sometimes and have to live by them.
He’d take that on the chin from a lot of lads. Maybe not a lad with man Utd pajamas (in the hot press for a decade) and who went to Cork for a piss up instead of an all ireland semi final
If Wood could throw in like Flannery, you’d be looking at…well, he was one of the best in the world anyway. I think Flannery was probably a superior big game player to Rory Best, but Wood was another level again, just a brilliant rugby player. Re today, he’d have all the advantages the boys have now plus his rugby intelligence.
Natural talent wise, O’Driscoll and Wood are miles clear. I think Sexton is our best ever player though.
I was at his intl debut in Australia and the crowd couldn’t believe we were seeing a front rower with handling and pace and actively seeking ball in hand. Think he even put in a grubber. It was unthinkable of a.front rower at the time, he was talk of the game after. He really did add a new dimension to the traditional role.
Was also at the guys final game in green, world cup loss to France in melb. We barely mustered a challenge and was a far from fitting end for a guy who was world class and helped breed a confidence into Irish rugby.
Sean FitzPatrick best 2 to play but Keith woods 2nd IMO.
Sorry, ya his throwing wasn’t great compared to everything else I mean, he wasn’t cat.
Sexton thing, sounds odd when there has been O’Driscoll and Wood, but he was fierce dominant in 18’ and they were winning. Schmidt had everything going through him.
Think I’ve read Kiwi’s always put O’Driscoll and Wood well ahead of the rest of the Irish players of recent times including O’Connell and Sexton.
