- You don’t follow Ireland much yet you can breakdown the forward play?
- I have often seen the work one by a previous coach comes to fruition with a new one. Have no idea if this is the case here, but don’t rule it out.
- In support of your argument, i have noticed that the best scrum coaches tend to come from the front row.
- He was shoved thru the system way too quick and thats the fault of others.
The thread title change
That’s revisionism and wishful thinking regarding Foley as a coach. The actual team performance under him suggests he wasn’t a good coach and there was a large enough sample size of games to make that judgement. The Munster support by virtue of staying away in their droves seemed to have made their mind up on his coaching ability too.
I think the best predictor of future coaching performance is to be guided by a large body of past displays so there’s no persuasive evidence to think he was going to become a very good coach either. In effect, what has happened is a reliable yardstick and any claims that he would have become a very good coach in the future are no more than feelings / hopes / hunches probably built on emotion and the loyalty he’d commanded from his playing days. It’s more likely the new coach (experienced with proven track record) has pulled things together than it being coincidental that everything clicked into place just at the time Foley passed away.
Overall, it’s a very Irish thing to exaggerate / laud the talents of the deceased and, if Stan died when he was in charge of Ireland, I too might have been swayed by that along with emotion and blind loyalty to claim that he was going to blossom into a very good coach.
Your ignoring his seasons as the forwards coach with Munster when they got to two consecutive European semi finals to be beaten away from home by clermont and toulon. Does that not count as any evidence of his coaching ability?
I think we are all in agreement he wasn’t a particularly good head coach so you can drop that point.
I said I didn’t watch Munster much. I rarely miss an Ireland game on tv. I’m very much an armchair supporter. I’ve been to about 3 matches in my life and never played.
I’ve no interest in dancing on the lad’s grave. He was a decent player and must have been a good captain. I just didn’t feel his stint as Ireland forwards would have enhanced his CV much.
For the record. I didn’t say it had. I merely listed his coaching experience relative to Staunton
Was it foley sent the email was it?
I believe so pal
Who sent it?
I don’t follow it too closely tbh…if I’m off the mark I’ll delete that post.
You are correct Gil
Another member of the wider management group. It was a simple error.
Despite all the grief and brickbats it brought them, Foley nor munster rugby never threw said staff member under the bus.
I know I am
I’ll paddle my own canoe, kid. I didn’t even know their was a game today till I saw this thread on the forum.
Don’t bother deleting it. It was all part of the information you had which allowed you to declare him a shit coach despite the fact you don’t follow it too closely. Leave it all there
I’ll take your word for it pal.
Great post. Fuck em…
You’re still messing up the years really, he was there in 2012, not 2013 which was the real shit show for Irish rugby. Ireland were still turgid during that campaign but it was only really the England game (where England annihilated the Irish scrum) that the forwards were genuinely appalling.
Foley was knocked more when he took the Munster job because he never had been away from the Munster club environment and there were claims he undermined Penney. Whilst Leo Cullen got the Leinster job with far less experience than Foley, the haste which Leinster had to appoint him and the fact that he had been away from Leinster during his career did put a bit less pressure on him than Foley.
It was indeed. In fact Foley handled the matter impeccably.
Reading it carefully to find out who was attending the game.
Cullen will be excellent long term. As will Dempsey. Stroke of genius bringing in Lancaster
