Cynical play and professional sport are a part of life. It does annoy me when people in rugby tend to go on about it being a gentleman’s game and squealing about soccer and diving.
It happens in all sports. In rugby you have guys killing the ball a little too long at the breakdown. In football you have diving. In American football you have holding/high tackles et cetera.
The perception problem football does have though is that the players diving looks ridiculous and it’s theatrics can be replayed over and over. I can’t really blame them though versus someone killing the ball after a big break in rugby - some people look for an edge.
One thing football can control more is the beahviour towards referees which is why Nigel Owens thinks he can get all high and mighty with them. There’s a growing culture of moaning about referees after the fact in rugby, but thankfully it hasn’t really made it onto the pitch as a widespread problem yet. The reaction to the recent New Zealand game was embarassing and over the top. There’s a growing culture of it which is gradually getting worse than Richard Keys/Andy Gray levels of referee moaning.
