They are going knocking Stephens green shopping centre and putting that glass box there instead.
I havenât ever heard anybody except Frank McDonald complain about it. My impression is it has always been a popular building. Itâs completely kitsch but so fucking what, it looks nice inside and out (well, the side part opposite the Gaiety looks a bit shit but you canât have everything) and itâs a genuine landmark.
Stephenses Green lads. Stephenses.
Tear it down. Itâs a shopping centre from a by gone day, a different era in Irelands history. The shops are too small and they canât make money. DCC and every retailer knows this.
The owners have looked at different redevelopment ideas but due to fire regs relating to the upper floors their hands are tied.
Rip it down. I think the new plans look okay.
I
Sure Mr Spokesman for Davy Real estate
On that site, should be 50+ stories.
The facade is iconic and should be protected at all costs. Paddy arse wil tear it down of course and build a refugee centre
I unapologetically love this video:
We need more glass boxes. Theyâll be iconic in 100 years time
Donât think people really complained about it beyond the top floor being a joke.
The Poolbeg chimneys were actually a point of complaint but became âiconicâ about 10 years ago.
Thereâs never been a point in my time of having any understanding of the world around me that the Poolbeg chimneys werenât iconic.
Theyâve been iconic at least since they featured in the U2 video in 1984 and probably before that.
Honestly the issue here is that redesign is bland. I think theyâve missed a trick not incorporating the existing look of the exterior with the interior vibe.
I do think itâs quite odd that buildings that are 150 years older canât be knocked down (despite having similar issues) and this can.
They were considered very ugly from my experience. I can appreciate others may have a different view though
That was never the case with SSG. The escalators were a bit shit and the top floor a joke but that was it really. I donât know how you could have hated it aesthetically.
On the childlike nostalgia point here and whether it is that which is driving the anger here, Iâm not so sure.
On a smaller scale but I always liked the âopen airâ Blackrock Shopping Centre that was recently revamped. I like the revamp with the roof above it. They didnât do anything to the units and and changed the vibe of it but I still like what they did.
Stillorgan meanwhile has been damaged badly with a plastic aesthetic. It still has the old feel of it but looks a bit shit.
I wouldnât lament the loss of DĂșn Laoghaire SC, although it had some iconic shops. I think it is only still there because Tesco grandfathered the office part in as their corporate HQ, despite loving their actually supermarket down to what I still consider ânewâ Bloomfields down the road.
I always liked Blanch, though I believe that has changed in recent years. I liked the Square too. I suppose Liffey Valley and Dundrum are considered iconic now by some of a certain age.
That said, I go outside of that nostalgia and I donât think that is quite it with SSG. I like the way it looks from Pembroke Row on a summerâs eve. Itâs a pleasant place to be inside and holds up better than a Jervis or an Ilac. Tourists also like it. I think the criticisms of this development stand up. If they did something outstanding with this then Iâd be in favour, otherwise it is a shopping mall that holds up better the many of its peers.
The parking was handy
Amazing really considering the location how utterly shit the tenant profile is compared to dundrum
Dublin Corp want those 150 year old buildings restored to their original look as part of redevelopment is a big reason
Stephens green SC was always a great place to buy a bong
Need bigger aisles for the monstrous obese Irish,
Weâve become Americans,
Even some of our young sound it,â
McDonaldâs has replaced sit down Sunday family meals,
Irish history slowly being airbrushed out of our education system,
Economy dependent on US pharmaceutical companies,
Itâs a pretty bleak future,
being eroded by our pro EU crowd of misfits in Leinster house,
Rant over
Can you flesh out the Irish history bit please?
Could the focus of your reponse be on the changes in the history curriculum in the last 20 years
Thanks
