His lyrics seen written down usually read as fairly lame, but when he sings them they get you (or me, anyway) right in the gut.

I have to say, Damien Dempsey’s new album is really top drawer. Stand-out for me is track 7, Canadian Geese. Beautiful lyrics. Any song, with that gorgeous melody, that begins “Down Kilbarrack Road, I head for the coast…” is always going to be a good one.

Not just that he really has to be seen live. The live album from a few years back is brilliant but in concert he’s absolute class.
