Last time I was there was for lunch for with my old man in 2008, we had the lamb, it was very nice. I think it was closed for a period, but was sold last year? Perhaps a poster with Waterford knowledge could confirm the current status. Personally I was never hugely enamoured of the place, the Guinness was atrocious and the owners (when I was in WRTC in the early 90’s) were a pain in the hole, constantly barring people for being rowdy, while encouraging hundreds of students to drink there. I preferred the Old Rogue (one of the greatest pubs anywhere, ever) and Downes’.

I was in it one night and the place was hopping. Remember the two timber barrels which were hung up over head? One of the steel rings came off the barrel and struck a patron across the head.
The Old Rogue was a good spot alright. Don’t remember Downes.
It was closed when I did my tour of the sunny south east last August.
Is the pulpit still going?
No. Some fellow from Carlow has it now. Operates as a night club only.
The Pulpit and Geoffs were two very nice looking pubs that i never drank in because they were so uttertly devoid of any atmosphere whatsoever. I was barred every time I stepped into them, the powers that be made the owners of Doolans look like a bikie gang. The Pulpit used to have a niteclub called Preachers which was great craic on a Tuesday night and quickly replaced the Bridge Hotel as the place to go during the week.

You would fuck off Fitzy. Geoffs is one of the best pubs in the country. Still owned by the same family who ran it 50 years ago, has an unrivalled employee protection record for the industry, has a customer base that ranges in age from 18-80, is full morning noon and night and avoided the architectural outrages of the Celtic tiger era. No television and has always had the best music on the stereo. If you were barred I can only imagine that you were acting the geebag.
I’m sure I must have stood outside the Rogue many times looking across at the geebags in Geoffs like yourself, wondering at your pretentiousness and pitying your self regarding importance.
I’m sure that being from Bumclody you simply would have been alienated by the cosmopolitan vibe in Geoffs and would have been happier in the cattle market that was the now defunct Rogue
