I find Christopher Crossâ 1980 hit - Sailing - to be a bit of an unheraled gem. Crossâ smooth tones align perfectly to the imagery the lyrics draw up and it conjures up that feeling of freedom weâve all felt, in l the sun, while Crossing water⌠that almost dream like sensation created by the motion of the boat and the heat of the sun. Which is replicated wonderfully by Cross in this song . Just Magic
Of course Cross is more known for his other 1980 hit Ride like the Wind. Itâs very much a funk hit with that 70s motown feel but itâs very much duplicitous insofar as its not set to a âblackâ theme but to a white - renegade cowboy - if anything. Having Michael Mcdonald on backing vocals- the whitest black man ever - just adds to it.
And now that Iâve evoked the great manâs name and you uneducated people are wondering who is this white man thatâs black (other than myself) here he isâŚ

Iâm like a bird
We used to sing that around the campfire when we went with the scouts to Lismore in 1979. Graeme Mulâs father was the lead singer.
The devil came and took me
From bar to street to bookie
No more nights by the telly
No more nights nappies smelling
Great song
