The Smiths - The Greatest Indie Band of All Time?

I’ve always thought that cover was a bit off.

Posh boys singing about working class Manchester shithole schools.

That’s all great but Oasis had much better songs than The Smiths.

The Smiths are the band all other bands want to be.

Down there with David Cameron claiming them as among his favourite bands. Just doesn’t sit right.

Jesus you lads take this shit very seriously

I like Bob Marley, sometimes I enjoy singing redemption song

Is it possible David Cameron meant to say he was a supporter of the band New Order but said The Smiths, like he confused West Ham and Aston Villa?

Fun fact: Iain Duncan-Smith was a big supporter of the Sex Pistols and attended their gig at Manchester’s Lesser Free Trade Hall on June 4th, 1976.

In an oasis of mediocrity they are unique.
Invented a new genre. Consummate musicians and songwriters, forged new ground.
We will never see their like again.

Does the body rule the mind or does the mind rule the body? I dunno…

Like the old eastern meditative mantra goes, ā€˜We are not the body, we are not even the mind’.

I took this to have two meanings.

Morrissey’s homosexuality
Society’s impact on who governs them

Interesting thread, I’ve been very involved but can’t remember :weary:

Paint a vulgar picture is my favourite smiths song and it has been from the first time I heard it, surprised it’s not better known, Stretch out and wait is an underrated gem.

Morrissey is the reason the Smiths were what they were, Marr was a brilliant guitarist but there’s loads of them, Morrissey was completely unique, almost certainly a CUNT but we can’t be perfect :man_shrugging:

Do you not find it too long?

My favourite outside of the classics is That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore.

Or Death of a Disco Dancer.

I’d have Marr’s version of Please Please Please over The Smiths version with his singing. He is a great guitarist.

The reason it’s a GREAT song is because of the lyrics, I’m sure any good singer could nail it

This is Morrissey’s version from Vicar Street in July 2023.

Happy to say I was there. It was brilliant,

Just on this.

The singer is everything in a band. Not only in terms of lyrics but they refine the melody,

Agree with that. But I’m a Marr man. He drove The Smiths to where they got to. As in he had a C licence

Marr was 24 when he left The Smiths.

He co wrote 70 odd songs of which less than five weren’t quality.

On top of guitar work, he used a small element of synths as well as random instruments such as a flute on There is a Light.

He was involved in the production of most of their stuff.

He also managed them pretty much during that time.

It is an extraordinary story. The chemistry in the band and particularly from Morrissey and Marr must have been off the charts.

Marr’s book is very good. If anyone wants a good read over the holidays I’d recommend it.
