The Snooker Thread (Part 1)

Len Ganley needs to shut the fuck up on the other table.

4-0 Knowles. Davis in big trouble

His stance is affecting him.

Today would normally be the first day of the glorious 17 days of ā€œThe Championshipā€.

Were we living in normal times, defending champion Judd Trump would likely be 6-3 down to a qualifier after the first session and be looking good to keep up the record of no first time champion retaining their title the following year.

A nice little bit of trivia I just learned - there have been three final frame deciders in finals at the Crucible - and all were refereed by the great John Williams.

The Nugget pulls one back. He will be delighted if he could end the session no worse than 3-5

Davis v Taylor and Hendry v White.

What was the other ?

Ebdon v Hendry 2002.

TK makes it 5-1 and looks well set to win the 7th aswell.

This would be a sensational shock. Iā€™ve just had a cut off Knowles winning 10-1 in running.

Iā€™m on the Hurricane outright. I think if he gets by Jim Meadowcroft in R1, he could take a bit of stopping

Jim is usually a very tough nut to crack. I wonder will he have one eye on commentary duties however.

May Bank Holiday weekend means semi finals and final at the Crucible.

Peter Ebdon has retired due to a neck injury

Watching Ebdon grind out a win at the Crucible was always compelling
Great competitive spirit

Such a shame.

Youā€™d have to admire the likes of Ebdon and Selby but they were/are hard to watch. Iā€™m going to youtube that match Ebdon had with Darren Morgan where they nearly came to blows iirc.

I always thought Selby was engrossing to watch.

I Love tactical, tight frames.

Thereā€™s something very forced about the way they play. I much prefer to watch the more natural players like Ronnie, Robertson, Ding.

I donā€™t think I know of another sports person whose form varies as widely as Selby. Utterly brilliant when on form and terrible when off.

Thorne in induced coma after respiratory failure

WILLIE THORNE: RUSHED TO HOSPITAL LAST WEEK IN SPAIN

English former professional snooker player Willie Thorne has been put into an induced coma after suffering respiratory failure while being treated for leukaemia in Spain, his carer has said.

Thorne, 66, had been rushed to hospital last week due to very low blood pressure.

ā€œThe doctor called me yesterday to inform me that on Sunday Willie went into respiratory failure and he is now in an induced coma and mechanical ventilation,ā€ his carer Julie Oā€™Neill wrote on his fundraising page.

ā€œWe are all hoping that the treatments the hospital are giving him while in this induced coma will help to improve his overall condition and at some point enable him to breathe on his own and be brought out of this coma.ā€

Oā€™Neill wrote last month that Thorne had sepsis throughout his body and was unable to move his arms or legs, but since then his condition had appeared to improve.

Thorne turned professional in 1975 and won one ranking title. He is also known as a snooker commentator.
