That three tier stand in the Parken Stadium (the one with the Coca Cola sign) stood since the 1950’s and was the main stand in the Idraetspark which was the previous stadium on the site before the Parken Stadium was built in the early 90’s. They knocked it down though last year to make way for a load of corporate boxes which look shite.
Revenue streams and all that boring financial shite I would assume is the answer. Revenue streams They had plenty of room to just build another tier above the uncovered part. A lot of people go on about the Allianz Arena being a fantastic stadium but I find it quite dull.
Stockholm’s Rasunda Stadium, 1958 World Cup Final venue and destined for the wrecking ball in the near future. Strangely, the second tier on the stands behind both ends were only built after Euro '92 but are still built in the traditional style with plenty of pillars. http://www.dif.se/images/rasunda/large/sodraovre_fran.jpg
Fritz Walter Stadion, Kaiserslautern. I like the sloping roof on this stadium, locks the atmosphere in and gives the impression that the stands go way up into the gods.
Bags of history and character, four seperate, unique stands including one of most innovative in England in its day, a great location and surroundings and a railway line within spitting distance.
Atmosphere-wise, I’m sure it doesn’t hold a candle to Monaco though
Monaco holds about 20,000 - of course it hasn’t the best atmospehere.
But look how it blends into its surroundings and generally is pleasing on the eye.
I think Stamford Bridge is a horrible looking place and having been at a big match there and there was no atmosphere apart from that generated by one half of the terrace - the Liverpool fans.
Can’t find any pics of it but Chelsea had a class cover over one of their terraces when they were rebuilding it in 1993 or 1994 or so. Some sort of a mural with a fake stand with fake people in it. Used to look cheap but class.
Was that not at Highbury rather than Stamford Bridge? Ibrox is a very impressive stadium all right - based on Highbury or vice versa - and it may have been designed by that same Scottish chap that sid mentioned earlier. Speaking of Stamford Bridge, I remember games from when I was a kid where there was an absolute load of room behind one of the goals back to the stand and there used to be cars parked on this kind of waste patch and stuff. I don’t think I’m imagining this or am I?
