The premise of this is wrong. The best summer songs will rarely have the word “summer” in the title or even refer to summer or anything to do with it. Music is seasonal though. There’s loads of music I associate with winter or spring or autumn. Much of it is to do with when I heard it first but a lot of music is better suited to a particular season.
Funnily enough I did create a summer playlist yesterday. It was mostly based around the sort of stuff Kelly Anne Byrne plays.
I generally only ever listen to this song or variations of it in May, June or July.
Pretty much all of this album is great summer music but Sweet Thing is my favourite. Released in November 1968 but soundtracked my summer of '69. I spent an unforgettable 3 days in White Lake, New York after a summer of lifting blocks. Great times.
This is my go-to jangly feelgood tune. No summer in the title, nor is it really about summer, or anything at all really, but it gets the essence. Some of the early Springsteen is criminally under-rated.
I would, probably because it was released at the end of February and I was actually knowledgeable about the popular music scene at that time so would have heard it around the time of its release.
