Djokovic’s first outing dismissal to Thiago Augustin Tirante in Cincinnatti a few weeks was a clear signpost for this. I wonder will he retire now.
He should retire now while still somewhat at the top. I wouldn’t like to see him dropping down the rankings and losing to nobody’s. Think it’s time now to call it quites. I don’t think he will get the elusive number 25 with Sinner and Alcaraz knocking around.
He’s still the 4th seed in an US Open. He’ll keep going I’d say.
Alcaraz will now certainly be a huge favourite for his 8th slam. This would put him 1/3 of the way to matching Djokovic’s record at the age of 23. By contrast at this age, Djokovic had 1 slam to his name.
Whether Alcaraz can topple him as the GOAT in terms of slams will depend on how injuries will play their course. Alcaraz has missed 3 slams already due to injuries after just turning 23. Djokovic in contrast missed only 1 slam in his entire career due to injuries which was the 2017 US Open after elbow surgery. The only other 2 slams he didn’t compete in were due to Covid vaccine requirements.
It’s a quite frankly remarkable record in terms of injury avoidance and conditioning.
Nadal in contrast missed 14 slams in his career through injuries, Federer 5 (excluding a few French Opens he skipped to prepare for Wimbledon in his latter years), Murray missed 15 slams through injury.
Unless some major new star imposes himself on the game in the next 3-4 years or unless Sinner and Alcaraz hit some big injury problems you’d be expecting that the two of them will be sharing 10+ slams between them over the next 4 years.
Alcaraz is just coming back from probably the worst injury a tennis player can have, a serious wrist injury.

Shelton breaks Alcaraz 3 times in the second set to take it 6-1 level it up against Alcaraz. Shelton unlikely to lose first set in tie-break.

Forgot how sickening American tennis players are. Shelton whooping and hollering in a loud obnoxious voice after every single point he wins. Hope he loses.
