Went into the record shop in Waterford today and picked up a few bits seeing as it was Record Store Day. Although I think RSD is a bit of a cod I operate on the principle that if I want there to continue to be a record shop in Waterford I’m going to have to support it (ditto the Book Centre).

Anyway as I’m paying I notice Mamas Boys Plug it In behind your man at the counter selling for 40 quid and I says My Mamas Boys album is finally worth a few bob. We got chatting then about records from that era and he says “ the most valuable album I have here is by Aonghus McNallys band Mushroom that sells for €2000 on the internet. He called me one day when he heard I had a copy as he doesn’t have a copy himself and when he asked me what I’d sell it for and I told him there was a long pause and he just hung up.”

I don’t follow the second part.
Do you have a copy of the Angus McInally album?

I’ve never had anything worth more than 150-200 euro I’d say and in the case of both of those records, a repress for each led to an immediate depreciation in value for the copy I had.

I looked online and saw there was a repress for that Mushroom album but mad to see the original pressing has retained its value.

No the record shop owner has the copy.

When he rang you what was he looking for? And how much did you quote him?

I think the most valuable album I have is the limited edition mustard vinyl of Selected Ambient Works Volume 2 by Aphex Twin. A lady I was seeing at the time bought it for me for my birthday from Brian O’Kelly in Comet Records. Aphex Twin never sanctioned a vinyl repress and although I was cynical about the limited nature of the edition (limited to how many copies we sell was the joke at the time) it can now fetch up to €600.

I’m reading it again and I still don’t get it?
What album? And what did you want for it?

I’ve edited it there for you. See if it makes sense now.

The man in the shop told fagan that aonghis rang and nearly dropped dead when he was told he would need to pay 2k for his own album

Ah Jaysus, Angus rang

That’s where the speech marks come into their own :+1:

Angus is a notorious cunt is what I’ve heard

As a follow up to this. There used be ads in the NME “Mushroom album wanted will pay £300”. The fella in the shop said it was a great pressing which was unusual for the time. He said the music itself wasn’t great. The band didn’t know what to hey wanted to be. One minute it was folk rock the next minute it was hard rock.

Where did Aonghus get Fagans number from?

Not what I’ve heard. I remember him doing a skydive around our way in the early 90s and he was great fun

A big man for the snooker too

Is he the red haired lad used to the Saturday morning telly programme?

Correct. Son of Ray.
