EMERGENCY services in Limerick have been mobilised this afternoon following serious flooding in a number of towns and villages in the west of the county.
The worst of the flood damage has taken place in Athea, where a number of homes and shops have had to be abandoned.
Limerick County Council engineers have confirmed this afternoon that floods have also been reported in Foynes and Shanagolden, while the water level in Newcastle West is understood to have risen two feet in as many hours.
Fears are now mounting that there may be a repeat of the infamous flooding in Newcastle West on August 1 last year, in which hundreds of thousands of euro worth of damage was caused.

This is piss. Yesterday looked like the 4 horsemen were on the way and today the sun is out and looking like a good day. All the while I’m stuck in work.
