Life on the road as an Irish tradition/ballad singer can be a lot more eventful than one would imagine

Kookabura vs men at work

It all started in 2008 when the Australian TV show Spicks & Specks asked contestants what children’s song was hidden in the flute riff of “Down Under.” The answer? “Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree.” A music publisher called Larrikin, who owned the rights to Kookaburra, was watching — and immediately filed suit against Men at Work.

The band’s defence was pretty sympathetic. Flautist Greg Ham said he may have subconsciously absorbed the tune as a kid but had no idea he’d referenced it. Colin Hay pointed out that Marion Sinclair — the woman who actually wrote Kookaburra back in 1934 — was still alive when “Down Under” was a massive hit and never once complained. Didn’t matter. The court ruled against them in 2010, finding two bars had been copied, and awarded Larrikin 5% of royalties going back to 2002. A final appeal was rejected in 2011.

The real tragedy is what it did to the people involved. Greg Ham was devastated, saying he didn’t want to be remembered as someone who copied. He died of a heart attack in 2012, aged 58. Colin Hay has since said he believes the stress of the case contributed to both Greg’s death and his own father’s.

All over two bars of music. From a song every Australian kid sang in school. Claimed by a publisher who didn’t even write it.

El ClĂĄsico is this Sunday. If Barca win, then they win La Liga. Apparently this would be the first time in 94 years (1932) that a la Liga title has been won in a ClĂĄsico.
Surprised that it hadn’t happened more often.

This years Champions League final will be the first CL/ European Cup final since 1971 between teams from two different capital cities. There have been three such finals to date.

Ajax vs Panatinaikos
Benfica vs Real Madrid

Cant for the life of me get the other one

Were Roma in it maybe?

No I’d imagine it involves an eastern euopean capital, someone that lost to either Madrid or Benfica as I think they were the only two teams from capitals that won it pre 1971

One of my many completely useless talents is the ability to name every single Champions
league winner from memory. The finalists best me though
