Joe Molloy talking about Mitchel on Off the Ball. So it seems to be getting traction. It’ll be interesting if any club buckle and change names.

Mitchel didn’t profit from slavery. He just had problematic views which were and are still racist. He also was an anti Semite.

I don’t get the where do you stop argument. They should just deal with every case on it’d own merits as John Giles would say. If there’s a lot of complaints have a good discussion about the pluses and minuses of each historical figure and then the club have a democratic vote of members.

From my time in the US I believe that there are plenty of otherwise good people who are racists, it’s a tough one to explain or understand but it’s been my experience, this will end up going too far, people need to be educated, the shaming of historical figures will achieve nothing but smug satisfaction for the ultra woke

Historical figures existed in their own time and lived accordingly. Totally unfair to judge them retrospectively.

There’s large areas of Tralee named after Mitchel as well. Not sure which came first but a lot of the area around Mitchel’s pitch is named after him. Mitchels crescent, mitchels Avenue, mitchels road etc. Wonder will the council come under pressure
