One of Paxman’s introdutory remarks before he spoke to anyone. Something like Europe is facing up to prospect that Greece would be vomited out of the Eurozone like a bad kebab. Not really sure I’d be offended if someone said we could be vomited out of the Eurozone like a bad pint of Guinness, but I’d suppose it was a bit crass.

Paxman sometimes seems a bit lightweight in that sort of discussion. His tone is still that of a man trying to mock some hapless junior minister’s incompetence, when in fact he’s dealing with the imminent collapse of entire nation states and international instability the likes of which has not been seen since World War 2.

He was fairly awful tonight. Krugman had to cut across him at one stage to keep the adult conversation going when Paxman was about to say “but you lost power after two years” or something similar to the Greek lad (who came across quite well I thought). You’re right - he doesn’t shake the mentality of inquisitor of domestic politician, a role he is very good at. Whether this is because he’s just conditioned to that job now or he is incapable of making the step up to a more serious in depth discussion of major issues I’m not sure.
