TAM already accounts for RTÉ Player streamed through their tv in that audience figure. 80% of viewership occurs through a tv, even if streamed. It is not fully “separate” as the piece suggests.
The person who wrote that piece doesn’t understand these things, probably someone from Evoke or something.
For the Italia 90 cubs who have avatars of players from English football players, that’s the case. Not more widely.
Football is a more popular sport that’s obvious, but the national team isn’t even in the South anymore.
Its more the fact that the soccer team is made up of all sections of irish society while the rugby team only represent the private school class. Therefore they are never going to garner the same level of support. I’ve been travelling down to mayo for 25 years and I’ve never encountered anyone who speaks like Caolan Doris. Caolan is obviously from mayo but he is not a mayoman. Rugby will just never have the same appeal regardless of all the slick marketing campaigns.
Even the boggers from Roscommon want to pronounce their surname “Mor-ray” instead of Murray once they get involved with the rubby. Like Hyacinth Bucket

It’s telling that so called progressives value blood line emigrants over immigrants to this country. All those English accents for years from England rejects and you’re criticising Dorris (who is fairly harmless) for going to boarding school? Let’s not forget before Parrots goal the high point of Irish football since 2016 was the chance for the supporters to boo Declan Rice and Jack Grealish.
The Irish football team have not garnered more support for years. Even in 2012 the “peak” average in the 26 countries was higher than rugby for tv audience. That’s no longer the case. The Irish rugby team not only consistently out-rates (and gets higher attendances) than the football team, but the peak is now the exact same as the football team.

It brings the whole way of measuring TV audiences completely into disrepute if it’s showing that the figures for rugby and soccer matches like that are similar. There is literally no comparison for how many more people are interested in or were watching the czechia match vs the NZ rugby match.

Rubby playing numbers have dropped over the last 5 years while soccer ball is increasing.
There are something like 90k rubby players at all levels and sexes. Over 2 million soccer ball.
This tells us the hype around irish rubby was real. Housewives and non sporty wimmin tuning in all over the country to watch the goys as a form of cultural capital. Team of us delivered… except on the field.
It’s great to see private school boy Tim stick his chest out here and pin the viewing numbers to his bedroom wall… Rubby at It’s absolute zenith in ireland with full belief of world cup victory could draw a few tv audiences that equalled the soccer boys at their lowest @gilgamboa
Tim needs to be weary tho as his house is clearly built of straw…the rubby moms wont be long finding a new form of cultural capital.
