Certainly wasn’t my experience of NZ. But that was nearly 15 years ago. The word I’d use to describe NZ is tribal. And those tribes hate each other with a deep racist venom. Hopefully it has moved on since then. I wouldn’t be hugely confident of it though.

Interesting. It was 2012 when I was there and that didn’t seem to be the case from what we saw in multiple places. No doubt it still exists though.
