It’s a national disgrace to be planting anything other than native trees imo and it should be stopped immediately. I know native trees grow more slowly, but fuck it. The state should be the ones doing it anyway, not paying private companies for it.

An unreal amount of money from urbanites going into Sika plantations in the West of Ireland as pension schemes.Poor auld @anon67715551 hasn’t seen the sun in years because they’re planting right up to his back door.

The worst thing about coniferous forests is that they support no life. They turn the soil acidic so nothing grows underneath them and animals have fuck all out of it.

Its all commercial which is bollocks especially when we are told its environmentally friendly. Its only good for the environment if its native. Irish wildlife don’t go near non native trees. These forests are eeriely quite

All you need is a herd number for the grant. Grants should only be given for native trees. Its not about the profits. More needs to be done to keep hedgerows. Its all about the correct balance to keep to eco system ticking

I believe not even mushrooms grow in there either. Its all barren
Here may as well be 6 inches of concrete on the ground under the Sika,absolutely nothing grows there

Mushrooms grow along the fringes.
Red squirrels can survive in them,and Grey’s can’t.
Other than that they are worse than pointless.

The hedge rows thing is a classic plan designed by committee. They keep them on the roads where probably 10% of a farms hedgerows were but they clear them from the fields. Make a lot more sense to clear the roads and keep them in the fields

There’s no natural forest that has Sitka only in lines for miles. Even in their own habitat they only grow in patches leaving room for other trees and life
