Udinese v Celtic

Celtic’s Neil Lennon plans open approach against Udinese[/b]

Celtic manager Neil Lennon is planning to adopt an attack-minded approach to Thursday’s Europa League match against Udinese.

The Glasgow side must win their final group game in Italy in order to progress to the knock-out stages.

“I think we can set up to be a bit more adventurous with our own approach,” Lennon told the Celtic website.

“The pressure is off and the players can go and hopefully express themselves and do the club justice.”

Celtic are vying with Udinese to join Atletico Madrid in the next round, although all results from Group I will be subject to the outcome of a Sport of Arbitration for Sport ruling on Sion’s appeal to be reinstated in the competition.

Victory for Celtic in Italy - where they have never won before - would mean they would leapfrog Udinese by virtue of their head-to-head meetings, given their previous meeting in Glasgow ended in a 1-1 draw.

Lennon’s team are on a good run of form in the Scottish Premier League, winning their last six games.

However, the Celtic manager knows that the Italian outfit will likely prove a sterner test.

“We have to be very respectful of the opposition,” said Lennon, who picked out Samir Handanovic as the star man for the second-placed side in Serie A.

"They are very strong in midfield. They have great strength, athleticism and quality - and counter-attack very quickly.

"Added to that, they have a brilliant goalkeeper. I think he is one of the best in the world.

"I remember him from the last World Cup for Slovenia.

"He was fantastic and he pulled off three or four unbelievable saves here in the home game.

"He gives a great foundation for them to build on. And, with people like Antonio Di Natale in the team, there’s always a goal threat at the other end.

“They are very well-organised but skilful into the bargain.”

I hope the fine does not stop our fans blasting out the tunes tomorrow night.

BBC Scotland’s Chris McLaughlin has just tweeted that Matthews, Ledley, Loovens and Commons are not travelling to Udine with the rest of the Celtic party this morning. An example for tards like Appendage as to why some of us like Twitter. That really narrows our defensive options and Kelvin Wilson may have to play.

Once again I’d reiterate that I’d much prefer Kelvin Wilson to play than for Wanyama to drop back to centre back. I’m a firm believer in not moving too many players around to make one switch when it weakens both areas.

I broadly agree but it’s complicated by the fact Wilson hasn’t played a first team game in 10 weeks. The only other conceivable option is to switch Mulgrew to centre back but we don’t really have anyone to play left back in that instance with Ledley and Matthews absent. It would involve drafting in Filip Twardzik perhaps and I can’t see that happening. As a result, it’s either play Wilson centre back and leave Wanyama in midfield or play Victor at the back and have some combination or all of Brown, Kayal and Ki in midfield.

So the way I see it - we have two real options if we want to go 4-5-1:

Neil has said we’ll treat it like a cup final and have a go at them so he could spring a surprise a go for a 4-4-2.

Celtic’s Charlie Mulgrew has thanked fans their continuing support after his father recently passed away.

The defender was given a leave of absence by the club last month to allow him to grieve, and the fans showed their appreciation by creating a song and continuing to sing it whilst the Scotsman was away.

“The support over the last couple of weeks has been great,” he told reporters.

"I have been very honoured also to have that song and very humbled by the way they have treated me and my family.

“It has been great but I didn’t expect anything else from the Celtic fans.”

Meanwhile, The Hoops need a win against Udinese on Thursday to progress to the Europa League knockout stages, and Mulgrew admitted his side have to be very alert at the start of the match in order to avoid losing an early goal and facing an uphill battle.

“I don’t think the management and coaches need to tell us how important it is not to lose an early goal,” he added.

“It is massive. If we can keep thing right early we will build on it.”

I was just thinking that Stokes might be dropped tonight. It would be very harsh as he’s played well as the loan striker against Rennes x2 and in the last game against Atletico. He hasn’t scored in 4 or 5 games though so not sure if that will affect Neil’s thinking. Hooper’s been in the goals more recently than him.

I’d imagine that’s what will happen, for what it’s worth I think Stokes is far more suited to lone striker role, Stokes isn’t the most physical but I’ve been impressed how well he equipped himself physically against both Rennes and Atletico. While Hooper is physically stronger, he doesn’t hold the ball up well enough. Neither are great in the air, but at least Stokes does try and compete, Hooper usually just sticks his arse into the defender.

Calling Manusboyle, Sid or any other candidates.

Maybe larryduff can fill the void?

Chris McLaughlin is reporting that Di Natale will be starting tonight.

Fucking shortarse. :guns:

Larry, please fill in the void tonight.

Thank you.

dancingbaby is another option for co-commentary duties.

I’ll do goal updates, that’ll be it.

How about TASE? He’ll sure give Totti a dig out.

Stokes dropped.

Wanyama in defence. Brown, Ki and Kayal in midfield.

A little over an hour to kick off and still Totti is without a partner. Ridiculous scenes.

I don’t think Stokes will be dropped, though I wouldn’t be overly disappointed given Hooper’s superior short-term form. I’d still start Stokes though as he is marginally better at holding it up and is at least an aerial threat from corners and the likes.
