I’d say that’s more so to do with the decline of Italian football than the new Champions League format.
Lads on here telling you Serie A is the best league in the world one minute then telling you they don’t know any of the players in it

Very few easy games in the CL days. God be with the days when you could get CSKA, Wolsburg and PSV in the group stages and still fail to qualify.
