Uk affairs, The Double Lizzie Crisis (Part 1)

Those people in Ohio , Sunderland , Stoke , Lens who voted against the grain weren’t in the main racist ( some may have been) but they were just utterly disillusioned with established politicians . They have seen industry shut , big finance run roughshod , and venal politicians enrich themselves , they saw young lads from their communities come back in timber boxes in wars for resources . All this happened under establishment parties.

No one really believes what they are voting for will bring utopia but what is there to lose ?

Not everybody that voted for brexit was racist
But every racist voted for brexit

I would think you are right .

Most may not be overtly racist but polls bore out that a huge amount feel whites in general have lost status and fear the time when whites are no longer a majority in the US. As well as that, Trump has given the cloak of legitimacy to overt racism.

The Republican party has pursued a strategy of appealing to such base prejudice since the 1960s and it’s no coincidence that the Republican party has become a party whose support is overwhelmingly made up of whites, with the overwhelming majority of ethnic minorities voting Democrat.

The central plank of Trump’s appeal for whites is that he appeals to the fantasy that he might be able to prevent a situation where whites become a minority.

It’s not the economy, stupid, it’s race that is the primary motivating factor for his support.

Don’t think they won two world wars either . One perhaps .

Huh

Trump won a few states when a black man won the Presidential election in 2008 and 2012 . The change came because people felt their circumstances weren’t improving due to a number of reasons . Trump attacked banks , Washington , outsourcing industry , illegal immigration and Muslims ( wrongly) etc.

Everything was funnelled through the prism of race.

I disagree .

Apart from the obvious areas where race was an overt factor, such as immigration and terrorism, his focus on the financial industry was inextricably tied to Jews, and his focus on trade was very much framed through hatred of the other, both in terms of low wage immigrant workers within the US and in terms of hateful rhetoric against China and Central American countries, most obviously Mexico.

And let’s not forget the whole birtherism thing, which was quite obviously racist.

There’s really no point in going over all this for the thousandth time. You either get it or don’t. Reasonable people get it.

Some great examples of attitude based, fact free, opinion here from the usual suspect.

Trumps’s win and Brexit are almost solely due to economic factors, with immigration policies (related to economic factors for the populations impacted) a distant second. The root causes came long before the financial crash and it’s aftermath, the trend towards globalization, outsourcing, the new digital economy, etc. started decades ago. Both the US and UK have been transformed from manufacturing based economies to service based economies, with the result that the middle class has been destroyed and more importantly the opportunities to enter the middle class have disappeared.

The economic pain has been regionalized, in the US the northeast and west coasts have done extremely well in the new economy and in the UK the southeast has done extremely well. The rest have largely been left behind and establishment parties have done zero to address this, and why would they as they are all in the pockets of corporate lobbyists. With opportunities for good jobs diminishing, and competition for lower end jobs increasing, it is hardly surprising that the populations actually impacted resist immigration policies that add more competition to an already crowded marketplace.

The above affects all ethnic groups, not just whites. Trump’s entire campaign was based on reversing the above dynamic and focused on job creation. Anyone arguing otherwise just wasn’t paying attention to the campaign. The meme that in both the US and the UK people voted for Trump and Brexit to restore a “white” country is simply nonsensical garbage. In the US the largest and fastest growing minority ethnic group are Hispanics, and according to exit polls 29% of Hispanics voted for Trump. Why the fuck would almost a third of Hispanics vote for Trump if they saw him wanting to restore some kind of “white” country? Hispanics voted for Trump for the same reasons that whites voted for Trump, jobs and opportunities.

The reality is every election is primarily about the economy. In the US, both parties have been completely out of touch with how the evolving economy over the past several decades has impacted the lives of most working people. The argument that Democrats care more is risible, given the experience of 8 years of the Obama administration with did nothing to address any of the underlying issues.

The US economy is actually doing OK, and if the proposed tax plan passes it will be a tremendous boost to small businesses, who are the primary job creators, and to business investment. In an environment of growing economic opportunities (for those that want to avail of it), that points to a Trump reelection in 2020, regardless of left wing whinging and accusations of racism.

Nonsense. Everything was funneled through the prism of jobs and economic opportunities, which is what most people care about, regardless of their ethnicity. Except those that have no interest in working of course.

Bullet points

It’s the economy stupid, as always.

And Trump wasn’t Hillary.

Correct. Hillary was seen as more of the same, which of course she would be.

Working on it bud.

You’re a classic example of stubborn, closed-minded, attitude-based opinon.

I’ve no interest in arguing with somebody like that, not least because you’ve consistently shown your ignorance about the issue of race for over two years now on this forum, because I’ve already run rings around you many times in that period, and because it’s really, really boring arguing with a fool who can’t see the bleedin’ obvious in front of their eyes.

You have no interest in arguing with me because you have been consistently wrong.

When you are shown to be wrong with facts rather than attitude based opinion, you resort to calling those that disagree with you pedophiles and racists. This is the classic attitude base behavior one expects from a child having a tantrum.

In short, you are an uneducated self absorbed moron.

That’s exactly the type of response I was expecting, exactly the type of response which proves there’s fuck all point debating with you, and exactly the type of post which shows why you are exactly what you describe in the final sentence of it.

Exactly.
