US Politics - A Society in Meltdown

What’s prompted him to hang Sessions out?

Even by his standards, such that they are, it’s a bizarre interview. You’d think that with the hundreds of appointments he has yet to make, 6 months into his term, he’d be careful about keeping the staff he already has.

Nope, he doesn’t care.

What’s hilarious about it is that he’s furious with Sessions for recusing himself from the Russia investigation after he was caught out having conflicts of interest. Trump thinks it’s fine for the Attorney General to have conflicts of interest, especially if they benefit Trump.

Then he tries to claim Mueller has conflicts of interest. He doesn’t.

And he attempts to interfere with the course of justice with his threats.

A joke of a man.

Trump is a pariah to even his own cabinet.

“Kelly” is John Kelly, the Homeland Security secretary:

Manafort had debts of $17m to pro-Russian interests.

You’d thus want to be mad to think his involvement in the Trump campaign was to benefit Russia.

Mad, I tells ya.

41% of Trump supporters don’t believe the stories that Trump Jnr met with the Russians.

You really can’t believe anything the New York Times tells you.

What are pro Russian interests?

The US / Russia alliance has destroyed the ISIS occupation of Mosul.

The hard left must be very upset.

Despite him releasing the emails himself

It is funny to see your hysterical reactions to the great job being done by the President of the United States of America.

It’s explained in the link, mate.

Loads of Trump’s people have extensive ties to Russian oligarchs and money launderers, often through Cyprus, which is a haven for Russian money laundering.

Trump’s businesses and property interests are massively tied to Russia and, it’s strongly believed, Russian money laundering and criminality.

Trump’s ultra-paranoid and defensive ramblings and his threatening to sack Mueller if he investigates his financial ties to Russia strongly back this view up.

I’m beginning to think that Donald Trump is not the brilliant tactician I thought he was

Good to see the Trump supporters now admitting what they previously denied.

All this is a non-story, of course.

When can we expect Trump to call the utterly bizarre interview he gave to the New York Times “fake news”, because it was the New York Times?

This is absolutely incredible.

Trump is apparently looking at how he can pardon not just his family and associates, but himself. A president can pardon somebody else even if charges haven’t yet been brought against them. The question of whether a president can pardon themselves is a much murkier one and could end up in the supreme court.

But given that he is apparently looking at this possibility, it speaks volumes about what he expects to come out of the Special Counsel investigation and none of it is good for him.

One can only guess at how many people he would need to pardon to destroy the special investigation.

The thing is that if somebody is pardoned, they can no longer incriminate themselves and thus can no longer plead the fifth amendment and can then be subpoenaed as a witness and be asked any question, or face contempt of court.

Trump has of course also been whining about Mueller and attempting to manufacture conflict of interest allegations against him. It’s clear now that he wants to shut the special counsel investigation down. Like Nixon did, he’d have to fire Rosenstein and possibly others before he arrives at a lackey who would fire Mueller.

What will happen if he does this is anybody’s guess.

Some people think that it will lead to the reinstatement by Congress of the Independent Counsel Statute which lapsed in 1999 and that Mueller would be reappointed by Congress to lead an entirely independent investigation where Trump couldn’t fire Mueller.

Others think that if he tries to pardon himself and/or others, that’s automatic grounds for impeachment.

But the Republicans control the House and Senate. Should Trump go down the pardoning route or the firing Mueller route, and I’ve no doubt he will try at least one of these things, I expect the Republicans to simply stand idly by and do nothing.

If that happens, the US will have proved itself to be a full blown authoritarian state and the Republican party will have proved itself to be nothing but a corrupt mob which will tolerate literally anything in its pursuit and defence of power.

Trump has asked his advisers about his power to pardon aides, family members and even himself in connection with the probe, according to one of those people. A second person said Trump’s lawyers have been discussing the president’s pardoning powers among themselves.
