There are two main elements to this. 1 The algorithm relentlessly pushing far right conternt. 2 The sheer amount of far right bots and trolls which infest social media and the algorithm pushing them and silencing dissenting views.
Social media is functionally a form of mind control, but it doesn’t control your thinking by brainwashing you or with coded messages or anything so sinister. It controls your thinking by convincing you that everyone else believes something, which makes you think it’s true.
On social media it seems like “everyone” knows something, usually all at once. Since people don’t like to be the one person who disagrees, they end up “knowing” that thing too, even when the thing is incomplete, poorly understood, or outright false.
Because this process is entirely about believing the same things as other people, and barely at all grounded in facts or material conditions or ideological principles, people’s beliefs can ping-pong wildly as the perceived social media consensus changes
Thus you have a country that in 2020 expresses 60% approval of Black Lives Matter, where the entire power class of political and corporate elites are pledging themselves to racial equity, and then less than five years later the same people are pledging themselves to MAGA.
Few votes shifted - a couple percentage points. What really changed was perceived consensus. The right wing took over social media sites, a lot of liberals left, and this created the perception that all reasonable people were pro-Trump. And so many people DID become pro-Trump.
Chinese eventuslly stump up the going rate for state secrets.
