Racism is a massive part of the issue.

Education in the US is stupidly expensive. Stanford is not a reasonable barometer of access to education.

Unemployment for black college graduates is double that of white graduates.

We’re talking about a country where there was segregated education one or two generations ago. That doesn’t get washed away overnight. Making Stanford free doesn’t solve the ghetto problem, it doesn’t solve the schools problem or all the associated social problems.

It may not just be a matter of race, but it is a matter of poverty and race is a huge factor in poverty.

Bang on about the traveller comparison though. But we like to think that travellers should just make a better fist of everything and so what if they grew up in a deprived household with no history of education. Why don’t they just go to college anyway?!

Education in the US is stupidly expensive and needs to be regulated, but its stupidly expensive for those who can afford it whether via parents funding it or student loans. Low to middle income families are very successful at getting their kids to and through college availing of financial aid. My point though is that for those who can’t afford it at all, regardless of race, there is massive financial aid. Junior colleges where you can do the first two years of an undergrad degree are dirt cheap to begin with, and you can then transfer into private or public colleges and again if you can’t afford it you pay nothing. The barrier isn’t financial, its cultural, as how can you convince someone to pursue an education if they have no interest in it, and their parents/role models/peers have no interest either.

While education is the solution, obviously the efforts that are being made by and large are not succeeding if one looks at the data. While the opportunities are there, the sad fact is it is really hard to get out of the ghetto. It’s not unique to the US, the violence may be more extreme, but ghettos are no different in Detroit, Paris or Rio. I don’t claim to have the answers, but it has to start at the preschool level and requires massive funding.

An old work colleague now working in the valley for Apple was visiting recently and a few of us met up. They have 3 kids in their 20s and he said it costs an average $40k a year for each in college. It is funded by 20 year college loans with payment deferred for first 5 years. The salaries and cost of living match. Should be getting near $100k a year out of college in socal

Some scallywags on social media who were criticising police and now posting stories about how great police are. You would nearly think they post what they think captures the zeitgeist for likes

Ding ding, round 2 in baton rouge

Reports of up to 8 officers down in a shopping centre

Was the shooter shouting alla ackbar?

More likely he was shouting ‘Black Power’ I’d imagine

Slightly sensationalist in my first post. Looking more like 3 officers dead.

Do you work for Sky news?

was Bono anywhere in the vicinity?
