On the subject of media finances I heard a rumour recently that Newstalk and a few other DOB enterprises are hemorrhaging money at an awful rate. Supposedly newstalk are getting pummeled in the advertising stakes and RTE are wiping the floor with them. The rumour goes that newstalk are being kept alive to deal with the fallout of the moriarty tribunal and any legal proceedings that ensue, and thereafter will be chopped. Time will tell if thereâs anything in it but with the exception of OTB itâd be good to see the back of it.
Not sure how the loss of any news organisation could be seen as a good thing, especially in a country with a state beoadcaster as strong as rte. Iâd be sorry to see it go under, DOB or no DOB.
