I doubt Pat Ryan would be fully committed to Waterford in a spiritual sense. If heâs taking another inter-county job a year after leaving the Cork job, itâs safe to assume he wants an inter-county job, and the inter-county job he really wants is Cork.
I would suspect a lot of the Cork players would also like if Pat Ryan was the Cork manager, not Ben OâConnor.
I donât think he should touch it with that group
Might be the Waterford job with none of the hype and pressure and train booking from fans would suit him grand.
Pat Ryan to Waterford would have a bang of Meehaul Donoghue with Dublin.

Cork managers tend to âgetâ the Waterford hurling mentality. Gerald and Justin McCarthy were outstanding successes as Waterford managers. I would have no qualms about him taking over.

Yes. Pat Ryan would be optimum appointment for Waterford. He would encourage intelligent attacking positive hurling.
Waterford, with all candidates fit, would be a game for anyone. Need Conor Prunty at full back and Mark Fitzgerald in half back line â or maybe even up front?
If an inter-county manager is managing with any inter-county team, itâs probably safe to assume that the inter-county job they really want is their home countyâs job.
It doesnât necesssarily mean they canât be committed over a short to medium term period but they will leave if their own countyâs job comes up and theyâre the obvious candidate, which Ryan would be if the Cork job comes up again over the next two or three years.
I think that effect is amplified in the case of Ryan, who came extremely close with Cork, and probably felt he needed a break after last yearâs All-Ireland final disaster and also a family tragedy.
But after a break the hunger builds back up. Ryan has unfinished business with Cork. Waterford woud be only a snack to satisfy that hunger before the main course comes around again.

It canât be a million to one that there wonât be a heave against Ben in Cork after the way the weekend panned out, although the players probably havenât enough credit in the bank now to kick something like that off.
Pat Ryan would be better off for his own sake to bide his time there all the same.
