Darragh Ryan ahead of Damien Fitzhenry? In fact, Darragh Ryan anywhere near where he is? Damien Fitzhenry not even in the top 10? What the fuck?

Pat Nolan voted best Wexford goalkeeper

Someone’s nephew is going to be very unhappy about this.

I’m still trying to get over the Darragh Ryan placement (no disrespect to Darragh, who was a brilliant hurler, but I’m sure even he would be embarrassed about this).

At least he has Colm Kehoe in the top 50.

That’s bullshit-how many times have you seen Darragh Ryan play?
One of the best full backs we ever had inter county and one of the best defenders in Wexford.

Brendan must have been stoned out of his mind doing these lists.

Darragh Ryan (who was indeed a great player) the highest ranked modern day player ahead of Dunne, Storey, Fitzhenry et al despite only having a 6-year inter county career that was cut short by injury is madness.

Where’s Brendan’s from again?

But he was on form here in fairness:

MINOR BOSS IN LIMBO

By BRENDAN FURLONG

Wednesday January 06 2010

UNDER-AGE figures fear that Wexford could be condemned to another disappointing season as a result of the failure of County Board to give the go-ahead to managers of three sides crucial to the future of the game.

Although Martin Storey met with the County G.A.A. Management committee some months before Christmas and has won their approval to front the county Minor hurling team this year, the 1996 All-Ireland winning captain has yet to be given the official go-ahead by officers.

Storey and his three selectors, Cormac Quinn, Noel O’Keeffe and Jim O’Connell, have already met with a squad of players prior to Christmas. However, this failed to meet the approval of County Board officers, with the gym in Wexford Park not made available to them in the weeks prior to Christmas.

Despite repeated attempts by Storey, his fellow selectors and the Chairman of Coiste na ng, Diarmuid Devereux, they have been unable to make contact with County Chairman, Ger Doyle, to have the situation clarified.

With the Croke Park ban on squad training lifted from New Year’s Day, the Wexford Minor set-up is still in limbo, with Storey and his management team unable to bring the squad together until they receive the go-ahead from the County Board which at this stage does not seem to be forthcoming.

The County Management committee are recommending Storey and his backroom team to County Board for ratification which is a mere formality as has always been the case, so there seems little justification in the Chairman’s failure to give them the go-ahead to begin preparations for the new season.

Frustration is now becoming very evident, with Storey and his backroom colleagues on the verge of stepping back from the scene, mainly through the lack of guidance and direction from the top.

This is coming on the back of Wexford’s best display in the Minor hurling championship in a long time last year when it took Tipperary extra-time to dispose of their challenge in the All-Ireland quarter-final.

Also of concern to hurling followers is the failure of County Management to move on the Under-21 hurling selection team, particularly in light of their embarrassing defeat to Dublin last year in one of the poorest displays from a Model county outfit in this grade since its inception.

Last year the selectors were only given weeks rather than months to prepare for the Dublin game, with one former inter-county player asked to take on the manager’s role by a County Board officer just three weeks before the game.

Hurling in Wexford is in crisis at the moment, and right now it looks as if the County Board are prepared to contribute even further to the deteriorating standard of the game in the county. Whether it’s a financial reason or for some political motive, it’s no longer acceptable.

With other counties having began squad preparations as far back as November, questions should now be asked of the reasons behind the Wexford scene.

Certainly, County Board officers and its Management committee should be required to explain themselves, and unless this is forthcoming, their positions become untenable.

Coiste na ng Chairman, Diarmuid Devereux, sought the return of control of the Minor county teams at the underage Convention, and this would be a positive move given the lack of concern shown by the adult officers.

Meanwhile, Wexford are also seeking a Minor football manager following the decision of Aidan O’Brien to step aside. As of yet there’s no indication of a replacement being announced.

Would completely agree with him on all the above. I haven’t been speaking to anyone at home during the week but I read on the Wexford supporters’ site that Storey and Tony Dempsey were belatedly appointed for the minor and u-21 roles during the week. Is this confirmed? That Diarmuid Devereux seems like an alright sort too.

1 - Sen O’Kennedy

Stood apart as one of the great inspirations of his era both as a player and trainer. One of the heroes of Wexford’s All-Ireland Senior hurling win of 1910.

He later captained Wexford to win the first three of their four successive Senior football titles from 1915 to 1918.

Sen was District and County Secretary for years, a selector and referee, and also county manager for a few years prior to his death in June, 1949.

An outstanding player and administrator, the pitch in his native New Ross was re-named from Barrett’s Park to O’Kennedy Park shortly after his death.

He was the father-inlaw of another man who features on the football and hurling top 125 lists, Billy Keilthy.

After coming to Wexford town to work in 1930, Sen gave tremendous service to the Sarsfields club.

36 - Paco Sheehan

Played Senior inter-county between 1951 and 1958. Featured in the Leinster final defeat to Kildare in 1956. One of the great forwards never to win major honours, but still stood apart for his explosive skill and finishing.

47 - John Harrington

Harrington’s presence at midfield had a span from 1988 to 1999 which saw him make a total of 17 championship appearances. Was a pivotal force in the Wexford sides during that era. His strength and ball-winning ability marked him out as one of the county’s leading midfielders.
