Wexford GAA 2022

Crucial information. Ferns will feel fortunate to have made @peddlerscross power rankings at all after a result like that in a Box Office practice match. They’ll be buoyed to hear that St. Mullins suffered a similar fate though. How did Mouse Kavanagh hurl on his return to action?

Wexford hurling is finished.

Big win for Oulart in the Junior B county final.

Oooo the back handed dig…

No dig intended, if i was giving a dig I’d make sure of it.

No, a big win in terms of the scoreline firstly and also the fact that they won jnr B in their first year back fielding which is a notable thing considering their hurling only set up. Be interesting to see how much they keep at it now. Also Rathnure too and if they push on a bit more next year

Any team with over 30 fit players available should be walking Junior B. Crossabeg did it to us ten years ago as well.

First teams shouldn’t be playing in the lowest tier. Start in Junior A at least.

Absolutely.

I was just noting it from their perspective that it wasnt a waste of time at least.

What happened Crossabeg that they went down so far? Did they stop fielding football team or something?

Exactly that. One of their guys even got trials with the County senior side. They were at least two grades better than us.

They lost 0-8 to 0-2 to James last week didn’t they? Lacking in scorers by the sounds of it.

Yeah, but its a start at least for them. I expected them to be better to be honest, quite a good few decent footballers there.

@Gman you play with jimmies?

@gman is a Mogue

He’s tried too a few times but they don’t think he’s good enough to play for them

I’ll get there eventually. I’ll need @count_of_monte_crist to retire and his position is mine

He’s still trying to redraw the parish boundaries to get around this.

With our senior county teams due to return to full training on 25 November 2022, we caught up with new Senior Football Manager, John Hegarty, to learn more about him and get some of his thoughts on the coming year. We wish John, his backroom and the players every success in 2023.

Cairde Loch Garman membership for 2023 is now open and will be formally launched in the coming week.

Q. Who is your sporting inspiration?

My father was from Fermoy, Co. Cork and while he never played Gaelic Football or Hurling in his life, he was a very keen cyclist. This meant that my earliest sporting memories were of cycling and my first big sporting inspiration was Sean Kelly. Coming from Carrick-on-Suir, Sean went on to be the best sprint finisher in the world and was the world number 1 ranked cyclist for years. As I grew up Kenny Dalglish, Maradona, Michael Jordan, Jack O’Shea, Mick Lyons and George O’Connor all made a big impression, but despite never competing at cycling myself, nobody could compare with the grit, determination and absolute pure speed of Sean Kelly.

Q. Who is the greatest Wexford player past or present in your opinion?

The obvious as Wexford’s greatest player is my teammate for over a decade with both club and county - Mattie Forde. Widely recognised as one of the country’s best forwards during this time, he was Wexford’s first football All-Star, GPA Player of the Year, and top scorer in Gaelic Football in both league and championship on numerous occasions. Along with his obvious talent, his dedication, attitude in training and ability to influence games was a big factor in a golden period for Wexford football.

Q. What has been your proudest moment with Wexford so far?

My proudest moment with Wexford so far was taking to the field in the 2005 National Football League Division 1 Final against Armagh. This was with a team that had battled its way over the previous 10 years from Division 4 to a team that could hold its own against the best teams in Ireland and was now considered a serious contender for silverware at both provincial and national level. Earlier in that campaign, we had defeated Laois, Galway, Armagh and All-Ireland winners, Tyrone, in the semi-final. The result didn’t go our way on that day but the journey to that point was remarkable and created a bond of friendship that remains strong to this day. The majority of that team would go on to compete in an All-Ireland Senior Football Semi Final 3 years later.

Q. What rising young star should we watch out for this year?

There is huge potential currently in Wexford football with a really good crop of young players ready to emerge. Cian Hughes from Kilanerin is certainly one of these exciting talents and one to watch in the coming years. Earlier this year, he was instrumental in Gorey Community School’s All-Ireland success before going on to make his intercounty debut from the bench against Offaly in the Tailteann Cup. He is a dynamic and exciting forward who has the ability and potential to have a long and successful intercounty career with Wexford.

Q. What impact does Cairde Loch Garman have on the development of Wexford inter-county teams

Everyone wants Wexford teams to be successful, those who make the decision to join Cairde Loch Garman are making a real tangible difference into making that happen. The support of Cairde Loch Garman makes a huge difference in allowing the Senior team to include some younger development players in the squad, players who will perhaps not play championship in the current year but who are gaining invaluable experience and top quality training, giving them the best possible preparation to become stars of the future. For the established players, it allows management to put in place the best possible high-performance environment and medical facilities to ensure that they are ready to perform on the big days.

Q. Why should people sign up to Cairde Loch Garman for 2023?

2023 will be a massively important year for Wexford football. Building on the good work done over the past two years, we are really looking forward to restoring pride in Wexford football but to do this we need the support and input of everyone interested in Wexford GAA. I can guarantee that the management and players will be putting everything they have into making this happen. I have explained previously the practical differences it makes to the squad preparations, but it is also a huge boost to everyone involved with the team when they know that they have the support, good wishes and belief of the Wexford public behind them. That is what Cairde Loch Garman is all about.
