Young girl collapsed and died during an LGFA final
Young girl collapsed in a minor football game last night and passed away, sounds like a Dillon Quirke type situation. She was a very talented Soccer player too.
Jesusā¦Dillion Quirkeās anniversary was today.
Terrible thing to happen. Especially for family and teammates. RIP
Its truly awful alright. My mam called me about it as she knows her parents. She was doing the cul camps coaching this summer so was active around the local clubs with kids.
How life can change so quickly. She was on the Wexford FC development squad too, so a very active and talented player. My own daughter was playing a minor final last night too at a different venue and I couldnt imagine her going to a game and not coming home after, doesnt bear thinking about.
Our club are actually doing a screening for our underage players in a couple of weeks through the Dillon Quirke foundation. Its free for lots of youths to utilise and get checked.
Weāve done this at our club. A great service and no reason not to do it.
Similar to yourself I immediately thought of my own daughter and it shook me.
I hear Derek is bringing Gavin OāBrien of Roanmore with him as a coach to Wexford. Iād know more about coaching a team than GOB. He is very much of the one forward up top two plus ones (plus 2?) at the back school of defensive hurling
Iām hearing he is getting 20k for his services. Derek probably getting a multiple of that.
Is he not still playing? He must only be early 30s still?
Has he done much coaching?
Coached the county minors a few years ago. To no great success.
Between this revelation and Doon having their eye wiped by Kilmallock itās been a bad 24 hours for Derekās ticket.
How did you go about organising this? Contacting the Foundation directly?
Ya, contact the foundation and arrange a screening session. Would then typically be a donation bucket on the night and we would also give a donation from the club.
Thanks. I see on the site now theyāve no dates until 2027. Didnāt realise its not covered by many Health Insurance providers.
We went through the McEntees organisation. The club subbed some of the cost, but all the parents were more than happy to pay and they are quite reasonable all the same. We had a few results, nothing serious, but more things to keep an eye for the parents and kids. Its certainly worth doing.
The last thing we need is doubts over another coach. We need best in class all over the place. Get this wrong and it will be another long year for us
Niall Quinn was on Saturday sport last Saturday promoting the Foundation and mentioned that VHI have now agreed to start covering it and they are hopeful that Laya and others will do so too in the near future.
Itās great that Quinn is promoting it. Not surprising given his links to the parish.
Heās an absolute gentleman and a gem to have as an Irish sporting ambassador.
Every provider should be covering it. Thereās nothing over here in the UK like it.
1984 county final?
